Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Letters of Anne Gilchrist and Walt Whitman is a collection of personal correspondence between two literary figures of the 19th century. Anne Gilchrist, a British writer and women's rights activist, became enamored with the poetry of Walt Whitman, an American poet known for his unconventio…nal style and celebration of nature and democracy. Their letters span from 1876 to 1885 and reveal a deep intellectual and emotional connection between the two writers. The letters discuss a range of topics, including literature, politics, and personal struggles. They also reveal the impact that Whitman's poetry had on Gilchrist's life, as she credits him with helping her find a sense of purpose and meaning. The book offers a unique insight into the lives and minds of two literary giants and their relationship during a pivotal time in American and British history. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

In den WarenkorbZustand: Very good. Philadelphia, PA: Walt Whitman Fellowship, 1895., 1895. Very good. - Octavo, 9-1/4 inches high by 6-3/4 inches wide. Softcover, bound in cream-colored printed self-wrappers. [4] pages, numbered 15 through 18. The edges of the pages are very slightly darkened. Near fine. RARE. "Walt Whitman Fellowship Papers:…Second Year: 7. Philadelphia, November, 1895". The successful Philadelphia lawyer Thomas Biggs Harned (1851-1921) was one of Whitman's three literary executors. The brother-in-law of Horace Traubel, Harned was acquainted with Whitman for 20 years and was in nearly daily contact with the poet in the last years of Whitman's life. Whitman frequently dined at Harned's well-appointed home in Camden, a social center frequently visited by prominent people where the poet shared meals and drink while entertaining his companions and Harned's three children. Harned served as a speaker and pallbearer at Whitman's funeral and funded the construction of Whitman's mausoleum.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. x, 452, [2] p. 25 cm. Black cloth. Worn corners and spine head. Hinges tender. Roughened page edges. Essays and poetic tributes by the editors and others, including Whitman himself. Perhaps most interesting are the extracts from letters written by Horace Traubel (1858-1919) to Whitman's friends in Brita…in. Traubel, not well known today, was an American poet, essayist, magazine publisher, and writer closely associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Many Canadians will be more familiar with the name of Richard Bucke, broadminded Superintendent of London's Insane Asylum. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the life of Whitman. Edition of 1000 copies of which this is no. 559.

(Myerson A12.I.c) (BAL 21430) Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "A first edition / With the compliments of Thomas B. Harned / Literary Executor to Walt Whitman / April 15, 17." Two letters laid in: one is a facsimile copy of a letter from Walt Whitman to a magazine publisher sharing his latest manuscript, and the other is a handwritten letter from Thomas Harned explaining the story of the former letter. Thomas Biggs Harned (1851-1921) was Walt Whitman's third and final literary executor. Harned was 22 years old when he met Whitman, and the two were engaged almost daily in the final years of Whitman's life. Harned received the facsimile letter included with this copy from Dr. Edward Everett Hale. The letter is addressed to Nathan Hale, Jr., Edward Everett Hale's brother, who was editor of the Boston Miscellany. Whitman was writing Hale asking to have his latest manuscript titled "The Angel of Tears" published in the magazine. "The Angel of Tears" was eventually published in The United States Magazine and Democratic Review in September, 1842. November Boughs by Walt Whitman, inscribed by Whitman's literary executor, Thomas B. Harned, with laid-in letter from Harned to Dr. Andrew A. Gour of Chicago. (illustrator). Signed.
