"Folklore rather than history; written from stories told to, or experiences remembered by, the author" Alexander Hunter was a Civil War veteran, serving in the Black Horse Cavalry which was part of the 4th Virginia Cavalry, J. E. B. Stuart's Cavalry Corps. This book is his tribute to "the women of Virginia who sacrificed their all that the cause they loved should never die." Hunter's goal was to raise public sentiment, and sufficient funds, to erect "a magnificent statue to the Virginia woman of the sixties. The women of the Old Commonwealth have erected many monuments in remembrance of the Confederate Soldiers, and it should have been a sacred duty for the Veterans to have a splendid statue carved in memory of those who divided their sorrows and doubled their joys." In particular, Hunter focuses on the Confederate women of Fauquier County, Virginia - for "While the women in no section of Virginia failed in the least to bear their share of the fearful burdens of that terrible war, I know those of one section best, and of them I particularly, therefore, write in this book. That section during the Civil War was called the Debatable Land, or 'Mosby's Confederacy.' By turns it was swept by the rival armies of the Blue and the Gray." EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; Signed by Author.
