This London typographical and graphic design journal notably gave an early platform for future James Bond author Ian Fleming in their extremely ephemeral 'A & I: Stop Press' supplements for issues 5 and 7, included here. Both supplements have a light horizontal foldcrease across centre, otherwise very good. The journals are likewise in very good condition with their original dustjackets. Sewn-bound paperbacks. Fleming's contribution was a proposal for a competition to "enliven the pages"; readers were asked to invent a twenty-seventh letter in the English alphabet to represent "a recognised sound or combination of sounds (.) all submissions to be received by 15th November 1947, with Mr. Fleming to be the sole judge." The prize was advertised as a book token. Some details following up Fleming's competition are given in Issue 7's supplement. Journals contain articles by Percy Muir, Gerard Hopkins, Roland Knaster, John Keir Cross, A. F. Johnson, Allen Hutt, Graham Reynolds, Harry Carter, James Wardrop, Derek Pepys Whiteley, Simon Nowell-Smith, Barnett Freedman, John Lewis, Paul Reilly, R.A. Bevan, etc. Profusely illustrated. Near fine condition.
