Frustrato dal mondo dell'arte, ha scattato foto solo sporadicamente fino al 1985, quando ha smesso completamente di fotografare. Nel 2000, diffidando dei musei d'arte, Hare ha donato tutte le sue fotografie e i suoi negativi alla Bancroft Library dell'Università della California a Berkeley. Ha conseguito una laurea in ingegneria alla Columbia University, un master in belle arti al San Francisco Art Institute, un master in sviluppo organizzativo alla Pepperdine University e un master in psicologia clinica alla Sierra University. Insieme alla moglie Judith Wyatt è coautore del manuale clinico Work Abuse: How to Recognize and Survive It (1997), che rompe il tabù dell'abuso sui luoghi di lavoro.
