Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Reprint. Paperback. The Macmillan Student's Hardy is specifically intended for those reading Hardy's novels and poems with no previous knowledge of his life or background. This edition is, therefore, well-suited for students at first examinations. The text of each novel has been carefully re-edite…d from the original Wessex edtion (1912). As well as an introduction and explanatory notes, each book includes a chronological list of the main events of Hardy's life, a glossary of place names, a map showing the setting of the novel, and eight pages of illustrations. Thomas Hardy's great love and understanding of the countryside in all its moods is amply evident in this delightful tale, which he called 'A Rural Painting of the Dutch School'. The romance of Dick Dewy and Fancy Day, which follows its course through the four seasons of one Wessex year, is counterpointed by the story of the rustic characters of Mellstock church choir - their carol-singing expedition, their struggles against the introduction of a new-fangled organ, their solomn deputation to the Vicar, and their contribution to the gaiety of all social occasions from Tranter Dewy's Christmas party to his son's wedding day. Illustrated. Owners name and address label inside cover. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. Academic, Scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.).

During the course of 1914 and 1915, some of the most celebrated poets of the day published their work The Times. These included Kipling, Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), de La Mare, Noyes et al. This special supplement collected these poems, illustrated with evocative line drawings. This issue preceded the election of the Lloyd George cabinet of 1916 and Northcliffe's appointment as Director of Propaganda. Although undoubtedly patriotic in its inspiration, this supplement is less shrill in tone than its contemporary, Northcliffe's Overseas Daily Mail, which expressed in no uncertain terms its mission to recruit young men from the Dominions into the sorry ranks of those bogged down on the Western Front. In good condition, edges tanned with tears, wet stain on some pages on the bend.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The American issue of the first edition, printed by John Wilson & Sons at the University Press, Cambridge MA, and with the Roberts Bros. imprint foremost on the title page and advertisement leaves, and gold-stamped to the base of the backstrip. 8vo. 210pp + [x] publisher's advertisemen…ts. Blue cloth lettered in gold at the spine, with a greeny-black-stamped design by Patten Wilson to the upper board (repeated on the title page) and a small motif to the rear board. Unprinted tissue title page protector. A trace of very light toning to the free endpapers. A virtually fine copy. No dust wrapper called-for. Six stories by Florence Henniker, followed by the seven-chapter novella 'The Spectre of the Real' jointly authored by Henniker and Thomas Hardy. 'The Spectre of the Real' was the pair's sole collaboration; it was first published in 1894 but appears here for the first time correctly accredited to the two authors instead of just Hardy (when Henniker's joint authorship was revealed the negative reaction to the morbid subject matter threatened to compromise her social status and alienate her usual literary audience). The twenty-sixth number of The Keynote Series (the cloth and title-page decoration here provided by Patten Wilson after Aubrey Beardsley who had provided artwork for the first circa-twenty volumes of the series - was fired by the publisher following the Oscar Wilde trial).

In den WarenkorbFirst edition. Original beige cloth with titles in blue and decorations in red to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with 24 fantastic full page plates by Harry Clarke of which 12 are in colour and 12 are black and white, with further illustrations in black throughout the text. A better than very good copy, t…he binding square and firm, the spine tips and corners with mild rubbing and bumping. The contents, with some offsetting to the endpapers, very light spotting to the prelims and closed text block edge and faint marks to the plate facing page 62, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. There is a short closed tear each to the blank margins of the plates facing pages 106 and 109, not effecting the illustration. Complete with the near very good, rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper that is a little dusty and toned with a few short closed tears at the edges and some chipping to middle and tips of the spine. A beautifully illustrated anthology featuring work by poets such as Rupert Brooke, Walter De La Mare, W. B. Yeats and Thomas Hardy. An excellent example of the illustrative work of the Irish artist Harry Clarke, displaying his typically dark and sinuous Art Nouveau style achieved with a combination of dense line work and airy open space.
