Zustand: Sehr gut. Gebraucht - Sehr gut -Plants are integral to human wellbeing, and many species have been domesticated for over ten thousand years. Evidence of plant scientific investigation and classification can be found in ancient texts from cultures around the world (Chinese, Indian, Greco-Roman, Muslim etc.), while early modern botany can be traced to the late 15th and early 16th centuries in Europe. During the past several decades plant biology has been revolutionized first by molecular biology and then by the genomic era. The model organism Arabidopsis thaliana has proved an invaluable tool for investigation into fundamental processes in plant biology, many of which share commonalities with animal biology. Plant-specific processes from reproduction to immunity and second messengers have also yielded to extensive investigation. With the genomes of more than thirty plant species now available and many more planned in the near future, the impact on our understanding of plant evolution and biology continues to grow. Our increased ability to engineer plant species to a variety of ends may provide novel solutions to ensure adequate and reliable food production and renewable energy even as climate change impacts our environment. The decision to focus the 2012 Symposium on plant science reflects the enormous research progress achieved in recent years, and is intended to provide a broad synthesis of the current state of the field, setting the stage for future discoveries and application. This is the first Symposium in this historic series focused exclusively on the botanical sciences. Topics discussed include: \* Stem Cells & Development \* Gametogenesis & Germ Cells \* Hormones & Signal Transduction \* Cell Division & Cell Cycle \* Regulatory RNAs \* Epigenetics \* Clocks & Rhythms \* Photosynthesis \* Genomics, Speciation & Evolution \* Stress Responses & Adaptation \* Molecular Ecology \* Host-Pathogen Interactions \* Symbiosis \* Metabolism & Biofuels Taschenbuch, Größe: 27.2 x 19.8 x 1.8 cm.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Wie neu. Gebraucht - Wie neu -This second volume of the groundbreaking Emerging Model Organisms series expands the collection of species presented in the first volume. Leading experts provide 18 new chapters on emerging model systems, ranging from honeybee, ant, and beetle to Ciona and amphioxus; squid and salamander to yam, Paramecium, and wallaby. Like the first volume, each chapter presents a new organism and provides a detailed explanation of why it is useful for laboratory research, along with information on husbandry, genetics and genomics, pointers toward further resources, and a set of basic laboratory protocols for working with that organism. Emerging Model Organisms serves as a practical guidebook for finding just the right organism to address specific research needs.

(illustrator). Limited Edition. A limited edition printing of The Inaugural Address of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, limited to 150 copies, printed by The Harbor Press for private distribution. Octavo, [1], 14pp, [2]. Gray wrappers, bound at spine with linen thread. Title printed on front cover. Title page with black text and blue decorative illustration. Uncut edges, printed on gray paper stock. Blemish on back cover, not affecting text. Issued without dust jacket. A fine copy, designed by John S. Fass for Roland Wood. (Halter T-548) From a limited edition of 150 copies, not individually numbered. (Horowitz, 47). Provenance: From the private collection of Frederick B. Adams, bibliographer of President Roosevelt and director of the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. His collection was sold by Sotheby's in 2001. This printing of the 1933 Inaugural Address followed a presentation edition of 10 copies, bound in full calfskin, for the persaonal use of FDR (Halter T-546) and a second publication of 30 copies from The Harbor Press (Halter T-548). No copies of the full calfskin edition have appeared on the market since publication. Upon receipt of the books, President Roosevelt wrote to The Harbor Press noting: "This volume reflects high credit upon the producers. The quality of this publication, both from the standpoint of binding and typography, is outstanding. I shall treasure it." From Halter: The Harbor Press edition of FDR's First Inaugural was taken from a stenographic transcript and thus incorporated the many last-minute changes Roosevelt made to his text. It "is therefore the first appearance in book form of the First Inaugural as listeners actually heard it delivered".
