Green cloth with black letters on the front cover and the spine and with a vignette on the front cove of a kimono-clad girl in a blue dress with black flowers standing in a woodland scene with flowers and trees. Binding signed TBH which stands for Theodore Brown Hapgood, Jr. Very minor wear to the extremities with the corners and the top and bottom of the spine showing a little bit of rubbing , three corners very lightly bumped, cloth clean and bright, all color illustrations in fine condition, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. Despite nineteenth century patriarchal attitudes and societal constraints, Emma Yule - the first teacher and first school principal in the emerging city of Everett - pushed the social boundaries of her time. She pursued a long career in which she held leadership positions often reserved for men, influenced and mentored many children and young adults, and traveled solo around the world. Yule was the author of numerous books and articles, and she wrote about the conditions of women she encountered on her travels. Throughout her life, Yule saw education as a means to independence for women beyond the expected roles of wife and mother. Yule taught in Juneau, Alaska from 1900-1910. After leaving Juneau, she relocated to the Philippines where, she taught high school for four years. She reached a new career peak when she was offered a professorship of English at the University of the Philippines at Los Baños. Yule was promoted to head of the English Department at the College of Agriculture, the University of the Philippines, where she stayed for two decades. Yule died in 1939. In her will, she created the Emma Sarepta Yule Fund, a bequest for women's education at the University of Washington, a testament to her convictions and a legacy of empowerment for women through education. Born in Boston in 1871, Theodore Brown Hapgood, Jr. attended Boston's School of Drawing and Painting. His work was included in the first national Arts & Crafts exhibition in Boston where his pen and ink designs were exhibited alongside other famous designers of the time including Sarah Whitman, Amy Sacker, Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, and others. Hapgood designed book covers for publishers such as Lamson, Wolffe, Richards G. Badger & Co., Frederick A. Stokes Company, Century Company, the Craftman's Guild, Ginn & Company, A. Wessel Company, Dodd, Mead & Company, Herbert B. Turner & Co., Little, Brown and Company, Doubleday, Page & Company, and Little Brown & Company.
