Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. LITERARY STATESMEN AND OTHERS BY NORMAN HAPGOOD 1897 FIRST EDITION. I am pleased to offer a First Edition copy, in very good condition, of the first and rather scarce book by the American writer Norman Hapgood. Wikipedia has a short biographical sketch about him, part of which I quote below. The book is titled: Literary Statesmen and Others Essays on Men Seen from a Distance, by Norman Hapgood. This small hard cover book (5 x 7 ¾ inches, 209 pages plus 24 pages of publisher s adverts) was published by Herbert S. Stone & Co. of Chicago & New York, dated 1897 and an apparent First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. This handsome little book is bound in finely ribbed, dark green cloth covers with bright gilt title panels on the cover, the spine and the rear cover as well. Excerpt about the Author from Wikipedia (with my thanks): Norman Hapgood (March 28, 1868 April 29, 1937) was an American writer, journalist, editor, and critic, and an American Minister to Denmark. Norman Hapgood was born March 28, 1868, in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Harvard University in 1890 and from the law school there in 1893, then chose to become a writer. Hapgood worked as the drama critic of the New York City Commercial Advertiser and of the Bookman in 1897 1902. He was named the editor of Collier s Weekly in 1903 and remained at that post for about a decade, before leaving to become editor of Harper s Weekly in June 1913. His editorial style attracted much attention for its vigor and range. During the latter part of World War I, and into the early post-war period, Hapgood served as president of the League of Free Nations Association, which advocated in favor of a League of Nations to adjudicate international disputes. In this capacity Hapgood helped advance the agenda of President Woodrow Wilson, who sought the establishment of such a body at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. In 1919 President Wilson appointed Hapgood Minister to Denmark, in which post he served for about six months. He helped expose Henry Ford s anti-Semitism in his article, "The Inside Story of Henry Ford's Jew-Mania", Part 4, Hearst's International (September 1922). Condition: This book is in very good condition. The front hard cover is almost pristine, barely bumped and with just some tiny white specks on the cover, barely visible, and bright & shiny gilt titles. The rear hard cover, also with gilt titles, has a water mark in the lower right-hand quadrant, barely visible and only penetrating partially onto the rear endpaper. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright, from cover to cover. The front hinge is cracked, just barely, and the rear, fully intact; the binding seems tight and sound. This book is not ex-library.…
