Magazine. Zustand: Very Good. (Vol. 3, No. 3). [several vertical creases in both front and rear covers, a bit of scuffing to rear cover, otherwise a nice clean copy]. (B&W photographs) The major feature of this issue is a fourteen-page interview with William Wellman, illustrated with many stills from his films -- quite possibly the most in-depth look at his career to have appeared at that time. Other contents include: an "in-depth preview" of IS PARIS BURNING?; interviews on composing music for films, with Maurice Jarre, Dimitri Tiomkin and Henry Mancini; article, "The Face of the Vampire," regarding "Theda Bara and her sisters in seduction"; a picture story on John Derek's second film as a director, COCK-A-DOODLE-DOO, which introduced his "new find," Linda Evans. (That's also her in the cover photo, by Derek; they got married two years later.).

Periodical. Zustand: Very Good+. (Vol. 3, No. 1). [modest wear along the spine and a few tiny scuff marks on the front cover, otherwise a nice clean copy]. (B&W photographs) An exceptional issue of this exceptional film publication, which took a couple of years from its inception in 1962 to really find its footing, but by this time (under the still-fresh editorship of future screenwriter-director Curtis Hanson, who had just succeeded founding editor/publisher James Silke one issue prior to this one) had really begun to settle into its groove. I mean, really: if the mix of elements and contributors in this issue isn't indicative of how well this magazine was in tune with the mid-Sixties movie zeitgeist, I don't know what else I can say. Two contributors in particular were on the cusp of bigger and better things (as was the editor himself): Robert Towne, here penning an article about the comparable screen appeal of Humphrey Bogart and cover boy Jean-Paul Belmondo; and Harlan Ellison, who contributed three film pieces. Two are film reviews -- of Franklin Schaffner's THE WAR LORD ("categorically the single most boring film I have ever almost seen") and Arthur Penn's MICKEY ONE ("an example of consummate directorial artistry") -- and are juicy enough, but the real prize is the third: a pre-review of THE OSCAR, then in production, for which Ellison himself had written the screenplay. The film itself would not crash and burn -- er, be released -- until about six months later, and it was one of the resounding turkeys of its year, but one can forgive young Harlan for being, shall we say, cautiously optimistic: "A great deal of love and vitality and honest has been poured into this film. As the last weeks of shooting near, it seems highly probable that these factors will show up on the screen. Time will tell." (Oh yeah, it did that.) A paired set of interviews (both conducted by Hanson) were themed around character actors ascending to stardom, and featured James Coburn (who was just about to hit it big with OUR MAN FLINT) and Charles Bronson (whose superstardom was still a few years in the future). There's a nice nod to the cinema past (mostly) in the form of a six-page photo feature, "Beauty," featuring achingly beautiful headshots of about three dozen actresses. There are interviews with the directors of two current war-themed films, James B. Harris (THE BEDFORD INCIDENT) and Bryan Forbes (KING RAT), and photo-illustrated reports on an Italian-made sci-fi thriller, THE TENTH VICTIM, and Cornel Wilde's Africa-set adventure THE NAKED PREY. The magazine even manages to pay some attention to independently-produced short films, devoting a whole page to James Frawley's J-24, including a short interview with the filmmaker.

Periodical. Zustand: Near Fine. (Vol. 3, No. 2). [very nice clean copy, virtually newsstand-fresh with just a touch of wear along the spine]. (B&W photographs) Includes an original essay by Harlan Ellison, "Three Faces of Fear; a Theory of Film Horror from the Works of Val Lewton." Also -- an interview with Richard Attenborough; a joint interview with the then-married Rod Steiger and Claire Bloom; a profile, with photos, of actress Samantha Eggar (also on the cover); a short article on director Terence Young; short article about the numerous films then being made on location in Spain; reviews of THUNDERBALL (Terence Young), A PATCH OF BLUE (Guy Green),DR. ZHIVAGO (David Lean), THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE (Ken Annakin), OTHELLO ( with Laurence Olivier), VIVA MARIA (Louis Malle), THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX (Robert Aldrich), THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD (Martin Ritt) and others. On the inside back cover is an ad captioned "What Sort of Man Reads Cinema?" (parodying the then-current Playboy ad line), with a photo of Luis Bunuel reading an issue of the magazine!

Magazine. Zustand: Very Good+. Illustrated by (cover photo) John Derek (illustrator). (Vol. 3, No. 5). [modest wear along spine, very slight bend at top right corner]. (B&W photographs) A remarkably rich issue of this always-interesting periodical, which tried (with mixed success) to be both a serious (albeit artsy) "cinema journal" and an industry-hip-newsy-insider entertainment publication. (Many of its contributors -- notably editor Curtis Lee Hanson, who later dropped the "Lee" -- went on to successful filmmaking careers.) This issue kicks off with an editorial comment that proved to be prescient and certainly demonstrated the magazine's "insider" cred: the statement that BONNIE AND CLYDE -- then only in rough-cut form, lacking a music score and second-unit scenes -- was "the most significant American movie in years." The magazine then proceeds to put its page-count where its mouth is, devoting a three-part feature story to the film: an on-location report of its production (by future Oscar-winning screenwriter Robert Towne, no less), plus interviews with star/producer Warren Beatty and director Arthur Penn (both conducted by Hanson). And also in this issue: a special feature on director William Wyler (who was just about to embark on his final directorial effort, FUNNY GIRL), consisting of an interview and a film-by-film commentary on his entire filmography, both by Hanson also. Not enough yet? How about: a preview (by L.M. Kit Carson) of the upcoming D.A. Pennebaker documentary about Bob Dylan, DONT LOOK BACK, and a nice little tribute to Errol Flynn, "Requiem for a Swashbuckler." All this, and more, in a 50-page magazine -- the only weak point of which, that I can see, is the sappy soft-focus wrap-around cover photo, by actor-turned-photographer-and-middle-aged lecher John Derek.
