For centuries the ice-floes of the Arctic claimed as victims countless intrepid explorers who vainly searched for the North-West Passage. Of the many who failed in the attempt, few escaped alive. Jens Munk was one of these, and his diary of the months he lay trapped in the ice while his crew died around him is the basis of this exceptional biography. Jens Munk was born in 1560, the illegitimate son of a disgraced Danish nobleman. The sea was his ruling passion: he sailed to America as a cabin boy, survived a shipwreck and lived for some years in Bahia. On his return to Copenhagen in 1598, he found that his father had committed suicide in prison and that his inheritance was forfeit. From then on Munk was obsessed by the consuming desire to clear his family honour. (flap) With lots of illustrations and some maps in the text.
