Top edge gilt. Light scuffing to spine and a bit of shelf wear. Ink signature on a front endpaper. French text. Erasmus wrote In Praise of Folly in Latin…in 1509. Having formed its outline during his travels in Italy and Germany, the author revised and expanded the work during his stay with his friend Sir Thomas More in Bucklersbury, England. "Folly" is considered one of the most influential works in Western literature and a catalyst for the Reformation. The work enjoyed great popular success, much to Erasmus's astonishment and sometimes his dismay. Even Pope Leo X found it amusing.

Title page printed in two colors. O…ccasional minor chips to leaf edges, closely trimmed, and lacking one plate, but otherwise pleasing: Good only. Erasmus's famous lampoon of religion, tradition, and superstition (also known as Moriae Encomium, or In Praise of Folly) was published in 1511, and quickly became popular. An edition with illustrations by Hans Holbein the Younger was published in 1515-16; the illustrations in this edition are based on Holbein's work. This edition is a French translation by Nicolas Gueudeville (1652-1721), likely bearing a false imprint. [64270].
