In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 2nd Edition. 8°. (32), 517, (7), 21, (1) pp. Strictly contemporary blind-stamped pigskin binding over wooden boards, upper capital slightly damaged, paper label with old title on back on spine. Clasps missing. Old title in ink on fore edge. Interior fine, apart from worm traces to the first five le…aves and a small paper flaw on the colophon page. Book plate on the front paste-down. *** Second separate Latin edition of Leo Africanus, much rarer on the market than the first one which had appeared three years earlier. Gessner's edition takes up the translation by Johannes Florianus made from Ramusio's Italian text. This edition is of particular interest because of the inclusion of Conrad Gessner's Latin version of Hanno's account of his navigation along the African coast. This is the first edition of Hanno in any language using Latin characters, after the Greek editio princeps. ***The binding by Binder C.S., active 1555-1563 (see Einbanddatenbank). Blindstamped plates of the muses. Dated 1560 under the central panel, one blindstamp dated 1559. A very attractive copy.
