Hardcover. Zustand: New. The Western Himalayas have always remained a theatre for all human activities-social and cultural and the ideal of human aspirations-religious and spiritual from the very dawn. of civilization in the Indian sub-continent. It is from this perennial source that all the socio-religious currents have flown a…nd spread to the rest of the sub-continent and beyond eastward where they subsequently developed into multiforms. The cultural strata of the Western Himalayas has, thus, been composed of the sedimentary layers of diverse ethnic influences and socio-religious systems which, in the course of time, got blended and crystallised into a distinct cultural entity. Most of those raciocultural strains have remained obscure through ages and, to discover them has always been a challenge to the historians and the scholars. But traces of those strains of the hoary past are preserved as an integral part of the rich folk-lore and can be gleaned through the countless myths and legends in the epics and puranas. The early history of Western Himalayas has thus, remained shrouded and mystified and overburdened with folk imagery and fantasy. In order to wean the grains out of chaff, it is imperative that those legends and traditions recorded in the Epics and puranas and the folk-lore are conscientiously evaluated and analysed in the context of the extant archaeological evidences, which al- though fragmentary and scarce in this region, are of cardinal importance for eliciting historical account of that age. The numismatic evidences of the ancient republics which held sway in this region in the remote past are so far the only means by which the literary references and the folk traditions can be systematically examined for their historical credence.

This mountainous state can proudly boast of being that part of the subcontinent wherefrom the Indian civilisation developed and proliferated to the pan-Indian dimension. In fact, the Kedarkhand, the classical identity of this region, formed an integral part of the Aryavart or the Bharat. Since the first settlement of the Indo-Aryans in the Gangetic plains, the snow-clad Himalayan ranges of Kedarkhand have been the source of perpetual attraction and inspiration to the multitude of humanity the world over. This region has been the grand repository of diverse cultures since the Khasha and Kirati cultures intermingled here ages ago. And, as the wheels of time rolled by, innumerable ethno-cultural milieus developed, flourished and vanished here. The imprints of all those past identities are still buried under the substratum of the dominating Brahminic culture. Obviously, Uttaranchal should be one of the archaeologically richest parts of the sub-continent. "In the present study, an attempt has been made for the first time to 254 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Contents: Preface. 1. The Carvers. 2. The Divine Wood. 3. The Woodcarving. Annexures. Bibliography. Index. The Western Himalayan region conjures up a vision of vast snow-covered mountainscape with the evergreen and lofty deodar forests. Besides, it has been a home to innumerable ancient and magnificent w…ooden temples, Buddhist monasteries and traditional wooden houses. All these edifices are richly adorned with the classical and immaculate woodcarvings by the hereditary woodcarvers. These artistic woodcarvings have been studied in detail for their aesthetic, stylistic and thematic qualities. Besides, an in-depth and detailed study about the artisans who built and embellished these beautiful edifices, but remained unknown so far, has been done for the first time. For all these edifices, the artisans used only deodar wood for the inherent structural qualities of this timber. This precious timber has been eulogised variously in the Indian classical texts, highlighting its various qualities. Thus, it is the devadaru, i.e. the divine wood , the amaradaru or amarakashttha, i.e. the immortal wood . The therapeutic merits of this wood may also be known from its various characterising names like daru, surahva, suradrum, suradaru, daruk, surapadap, devahv, devadrum, devakahttha, devahvay and mahadaru, etc. in the classical texts. This underlines the importance of deodar as sacred wood in the Indian classical tradition and the folklore of this region. All these aspects have been studied in detail in this book. Some of the finest examples of longevity of this timber are the more than 1300 years old Lakshana Devi Temple at Brahmaur and the Shakti Devi Temple at Chitrari, both in the interiors of the Ravi Valley of Chamba (Himachal Pradesh), the Markula Devi Temple in the Chandrabhaga Valley and an ancient Dakshineshvar Mahadev Temple in the Kurpan Valley at Nirmand. These are only a few of the richly carved wooden temples, but several more such temples exist in the interiors of this region. Many of these have been studied in detail in this work. This is a pioneering work on the ancient wood-based art and architecture of the Western Himalayan region. The researchers, scholars and general readers shall find it very useful and informative.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The earlier book -- Naga Cult & Traditions -- published in 2004 became unavailable within a few months. Since then, there had been a constant demand among the academicians, and readers. That forced me to go deeper in the field on this subject. Thus, a deeper and wide-ranging fieldwork and research was un…dertaken on the various aspects of this mysterious theme, covering once again the entire expanse of the Western Himalayan region right from Kashmir to Uttarakhand. Besides, to study as to how the various aspects of the serpent cults, beliefs, mystic rituals and the sanguinary practices associated with this cult found roots among the native inhabitants and the ruling houses in the Western Himalayan region was undertaken. Based on that unexplored data, the subject was taken up afresh in logical and vivid manner. The field data discovered afresh about the folklore and rituals associated with the serpent cults and mystic practices, which forms a very important part of the present study, which forms a very important part of this study. The traditional belief systems that and the socioeconomic practices associated with the serpent lore should have been responsible for the fusion of indigenous Rudra and serpent-based cults, but all those have now been forgotten. Most of those cultic practices have are now almost lost, but still faintly survive among the elderly people. Attempt has been made to deeply discover those. Besides, the beliefs, rituals and folklore associated with the serpent cults have been discovered and elaborately explained in a lucid diction. The present volume Serpent Lore of the Western Himalayan Region -- is a thoroughly investigated and analysed study. It is spread in 10 chapters as follows: (1) Geophysical Setting (2) Socio-cultural Backdrop (3) Geneses and Proliferation of Serpent Cults (4) The Serpents of Aquatic Sphere (5) The Serpents of Terrestrial Sphere (6) Serpent as the Lord of Weather (7) The Serpents of Lower Kinnaur (8.) Serpent as a Terrific God (9) Serpent as the Patron God (10) Gugga as the Anthropomorphized Hero. Besides, the book contains four Appendices containing useful information for the researchers and readers.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. It is perhaps for the first time that a book on the Indian indigenous architecture is attempted. Written in a lucid diction, it deals with the architectural traditions of Indian adivasi communities, highlighting the vital architectural peculiarities of indigenous domestic architecture, which… have so far remained completely ignored. The dwellings of adivasi people living in the secluded pockets are the true 'homes' in letter and spirit which offer warm, affectionate and protective acceptance like mother`s bosom, because each person of the family puts in his heart, soul and sweat to make these from the locally available raw materials. The walls painted with the enchanting devices and figures form an integral part of these 'homes'. Thus, if the structure is a 'physical component' of a 'home', the wall paintings form its `spiritual component`. Therefore, none of these 'homes' is a cold structure, but the vibrant embodiment of grih-devata. The architecture of these dwellings is a class by itself for its nostalgic charm and quintessential qualities. It never transgresses the natural ambiance of the locality, but complements it by imparting 'humane' touch. Thus, each of the traditional homesteads forms an organic part of the local environment. This study may provide knowledge base to conceptualise the idea of 'Green Architecture' or 'Natural Architecture', which has lately become a worldwide craze against the conventional or the 'synthetic architecture'. Obviously, the 'Green Architecture' has to be eco-friendly, conducive to the body, spirit and lifestyle of the people, responsive to the local cultural ethos and the natural environment. If some practices of the indigenous Indian architecture are modified and adopted into the 'Green Architecture' for the residential buildings as an alternative to the conventional 'synthetic architecture', the landscape shall look naturally greener and pleasing. The book, spread in 13 chapters, is based on the field study of many years covering most of the adivasi pocket of the country. The book is tastefully illustrated with 80 interesting sketches, drawings and a few photographs that the author prepared during his field studies. This pioneering work is of great use and interest for the architects, policymakers, planners, sociologists and general readers. (jacket).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Kullu has been rightly defined as the Land of Gods, for this magnificent land is the home for some of the finest and ancient wooden and stone temples in the entire Himalayan region. The natural setting of this region, characterised by the verdant valleys and towering mountains, conjures up a… vision of serene ambience and natural extravaganza. The history of region may be traced to a period anterior to the Ramayan Age. The ancient Kullot coins establish existence of a regular administrative system here as early as the 1st century BCE. The archaeological and literary evidences affirm an influential sway of Buddhism in this region as early as CE 2nd century and the Chinese pilgrim Hiuen-Tsang found it flourishing during his visit to this region in about CE 634. For such good reasons, the Kullu Valley has attracted notice of many explorers, scholars and administrators since the colonial period, but most of them confined themselves to its scenic grandeur. Thus, little is known about its cultural history, archaeology and architecture despite the fact that it is extremely rich in these areas. The age-old and magnificent stone and wooden temples and objects of faith preserved in these reflect vividly the sociocultural ethos of this region. It is for the first time that the cultural history, archaeology and architecture of this region have been discussed critically in the present work, which is largely based on the firsthand study of the author. Written in lucid style, the book is divided in three section: Historical Review, Archaeology and Architecture, and spread in nine chapters, each dealing with different topic. Being highly informative and well-illustrated with photographs, sketches and maps, this book shall be of great interest and use for general readers and research scholars. (jacket).

Appendices 1. Calendar for various fasts and festivals. 2. Plants and the colours derived from them. Bibliography. Index. The Western Himalay…an Region is not only known for its natural grandeur but it has also been the home of enchanting folk arts. Though having passed through the sieve of time those are still vibrant and colourful in their pristine glory. Located strategically on the northwestern corner of the subcontinent the western Himalayan Region has been a rendezvous for the multitude of people of various hues and persuasions since the remotest times. While some of them dispersed to different directions leaving their imprints behind many preferred to settle in the congenial ambiance of mountains. Thus this region has been a home for different ethnic communities. Obviously it has been veritable nursery for the numerous popular arts to bloom mingle and develop into multiform. These folk arts have imbibed diverse racio cultural influences in them. Those are vividly reflected in them making them international in spirit and content. In our age despite the incessant incursion of market culture into the religious socio cultural life of the people most of the folk arts are still very much vibrant and living in the Himalayan sanctuaries preserving the traditional ethos of the people and the finer nuances of their inherited value system. Thus the folk arts of this region are as subtle propitious and colourful as the salubrious Himalayan environment is. These not only bring out the religio aesthetic aspirations of the common folks but also reflect their innate concern for the nature that sustains them. In the present work folk arts of the Western Himalayan Region have been studied in the national and global contexts to establish the traditional bonds between different communities and nationalities. To that end besides discussing the relationship between environment and folk art the book also delves deeper to study folksong folktale folk painting folk images and sculptures folkdance and folk theatre. Each of these topics has been dealt very intimately to interpret the finer and subtle nuances of the religio aesthetic aspirations the popular belief systems and the socio cultural traditions of the people. This work is an honest and in depth presentation of the religio aesthetic traditions of Western Himalayan region. 167 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Himachal Pradesh has been generally eulogised as the Dev-bhumi, i.e. the Realm of Divine, but given the number of ancient temples dedicated to Shiv and his numerous manifestations, it may aptly be called Shiv-bhumi, i.e. the Land of Shiv. The snow-clad peaks and the perilous mountainous passes are consid…ered the abode of Shiv. Being closely associated with the snow-clad Western Himalayan heights, Shiv is regarded as the eternal custodian of the weather, land, life and culture of the people of the Western Himalayan region in general and Himachal Pradesh in particular. It may be perhaps for that reason that Himachal Pradesh has innumerable stone temples of North Indian architectural style as well as the 'ageless' deodar wood temples designed and built by the Pahari artisans in the typically Pahari architectural style dedicated to Lord Shiv. Those temples are not only architectural marvels, but they are also very rich in artistic woodcarvings. In the present study, the most important and venerable 38 ancient temples spread over the districts of Chamba, Kangra, Lahul & Spiti, Kullu, Mandi, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Sirmaur and Shimla have been studied and discussed in detail, with due regard to their religious, historical, architectural, structural and artistic aspects. In fact, Shaivism is one of the most ancient and popular cults in Himachal Pradesh, where Shiv is known by various classical and local names. Besides, these temples of the popular faith also command considerable religious following. The book is illustrated with a number of colour plates and drawings. For the convenience of academicians, researchers and general readers, an exhaustive glossary of classical terms used in this book, has also been appended. Dr. O. C. Handa (born 2nd Oct. 1936 at Mandi in H.P.) is a well-known connoisseur of art and culture, having been in the field for more than half a century. He is an outstanding scholar of the history and archaeology of India in general and the Himalayan region in particular. He has authored thirty-five books on various aspects of Indian culture. The Government of Himachal Pradesh honoured him with the Prerana Strot Samman (2018) and Shikhar Samman (2020).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Human has been striving to make his surrounding pleasing to his senses since the earliest time. Although, his sense perception in that age had not been as discerning as of the modern person, yet the innate sense of beauty was natural to him. That is why we feel an invisible umbilical link be…tween the primitive and the modern creative process. In the present study, that invisible link has been explored: the unlettered and unnoticed country folks have been the humble and unassuming couriers of that process from the primitive age to our times. This phenomenon has been universally similar. In most of the developed and developing countries, either that intermediate link has been swept away by the winds of changes or that is verging on extinction. However, in India that link is still vibrant in its nostalgic charm and pristine purity in the folk paintings of the indigenous communities and rural folks. In the present study, THE COLOURS OF EARTH, an attempt has been made to discover, collate and study in depth every aspect of that folk creative process to establish its importance, relevance and dignity in the modern scenario lest that should also be swept away by the winds of market culture. Spread in eight chapters and written in a very lucid diction, this book presents a comprehensive study of the Indian folk painting. The book is illustrated with 82 line drawings and 78 colour plates. Besides, two very important appendices, one on the Art of Tattooing and the other on the Cow dung and its Significance, further add to its importance. (jacket).
