They relate to: The King's shilling being passed over to Gordon Highlander Recruits by Jane The Duchess of Gordon who is said to have passed each one with a kiss and it was in her lips/mouth. Small one intimates that Margery saw a likeness between The Princess of Wales and The Duchess of Gordon. The final clip relates about the Garden Memorial left in honour. - Margery Weiner [Sarah Stamford] was a notable Napoleonic scholar and first head of The Daily Telegraph, information bureau. Calif. 90024. The letter is quite revealing about the inner workings of 'Hollywood': Dearest Clement - Oh such dramas at The Listener in our absence. In writing of those critics who rushed in to print on the day of the Garden press conference, Ted called them 'sour and silly'. An editorial lady, without consultation, changed it to 'foolish and spiteful'. Anxious to make the cap fit, Oleg wrote saying it must mean him. John Percival demanded an apology. All this was waiting for us on arrival here, asking for an immediate reply. Ted wrote one. Then a phone call - all the way from London dear - saying that Oleg was going to sue and they didn't want to print the reply. Please plug into the bush telegraph, and let the whole story be widely known! I hope your holiday was divine. We had a marvelous drive across through fantastic scenery, staying in what is known locally as 'lugjury', with knee high wall to wall shag (!), vanitory areas and personalised cocktails. When you have twenty four hours to spare we will show it to you on our home movie screen. We rode Western style in Yellowstone and stamped on the Utah salt flats and Harriet had to hold the teaspoons in her hand when going through metal detectors so that we could board those horrible aeroplanes. We are now settled here as if we have never been away, caught in the poolside social whirl. I actually have an office at Twentieth Century Fox, and I loll back in the gold plastic interior of our motor as Ted chauffeurs me in past the gate guards. He wears a peaked cap and I fling the imaginery white fox stole. It is all rather splendid. He is in the extraordinary situation of having Don Siegal, Dino de Laurentis and Hal Wallis all wanting to make Santa Fe. He wants Siegal to make it, and has flown to Carson City for talks while the current film is being shot and you can imagine the transAtlantic excitement Ted will also do the screen-play whichever one is selected! A daye has elapsed. A hideous evening yesterday when I gave up speaking. Every time I spoke someone shouted across me about what pills they were taking for what and when. Even when asked a direct question, no-one listened to my answer. RUDE HORRID PEOPLE. And the dinner was heavy and cold. There are times when I know that if I didn't keep a teapot for my Californian visitsI would not get past the afternoons sane. Ballet non existant except for Tania's classes. We went to see Follies, quite the worst and most sentimental piece ever produced, which got all the awards! So why do I love it?
