In den WarenkorbHardcover. 2nd edition. Second edition, with introduction. xci, 548 p.; 22 cm. (Bampton lectures ; 1832) [First edition 1833] From the 1833 Preface: `It is not an unusual effect of taking a particular view of a subject, to give the appearance of overlooking another view of it, no less important than that immediately presented.' `I request accordingly, that it may be remembered throughout, what is the immediate and restricted business of my inquiry: that it presupposes a Divine origin to the Christian revelation, and a superintending Providence over its whole course. This is my point of departure.' Before 1830 Hampden's relations with John Henry Newman were friendly: Newman's`remarkable power of giving expression to the grand words of the burial service [for two of Hampden's daughters in 1829 and 1831] was long recollected' (Memorials of Bishop Hampden, p. 22). His earliest suspicion of Hampden appears in a letter of 9 January 1830 to Hurrell Froude. In January 1834 so sure was Newman of being elected Professor of Moral Theology that he wished for this title to stand in his Parochial sermons; he then wrote to John Keble, `I am floored as to the professorship by the great Hampden.' In February 1836, Lord Melbourne's naming Hampden as Regius Professor of Divinity set off the first `Hampden controversy': in his anonymous `Elucidations of Dr. Hampden's theological statements' Newman sums up as Hampden's theory `that there is one and one only truth, that that truth is the record of facts, historical and moral, contained in the text of Scripture; that whatever is beyond that text, even to the classifying of its sentences, is human opinion, and unrevealed' (p. 46). Hampden's cool response appears on p. [xvii]-xci of this 2nd edition. NF diced tan calf, tooled spine. Marbled edges and endpapers.…
