Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. A very close to new copy. In 1848, two decades after a French inventor mixed daylight with a cocktail of chemicals to fix the view outside his window onto a metal plate, photography arrived in Aotearoa. How did these 'portraits in a machine' reveal M?ori and P?keh? to themselves and to each other? Were the first photographs 'a good likeness' or were they tricksters? What stories do they capture of the changing landscape of Aotearoa? From horses laden with mammoth photographic plates in the 1870s to the arrival of the Kodak in the late 1880s, New Zealand's first photographs reveal K?ngi and governors, geysers and slums, battles and parties. They freeze faces in formal studio portraits and stumble into the intimacy of backyards, gardens and homes.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. A vivid and revealing book published alongside a landmark exhibition focused on one of New Zealand's most internationally recognised artists, Frances Hodgkins. Marking the 150th anniversary of the artist's birth New Zealand-born Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947) arrived in London in 1901 and, by the 1920s, had become a leading British modernist, exhibiting frequently with avant-garde artists such as Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Published to coincide with a touring exhibition of her work initiated by Auckland Art Gallery Toi o T?maki, this book explores Hodgkins as a traveller across cultures and landscapes - teaching and discovering the cubists in Paris, absorbing the landscape and light of Ibiza and Morocco, and exhibiting with the progressive Seven & Five Society in London. Complete with a rich visual chronology of the artist's encounters abroad, alongside over one hundred of Hodgkins' key paintings and drawings, the book is an illuminating journey that moves us from place to place through the writings of a number of distinguished national and international art historians, curators and critics: Frances Spalding (University of Cambridge, England), Alexa Johnston (Auckland-based writer and curator), Elena Taylor (University of New South Wales, Australia), Antoni Ribas Tur (Ara newspaper, Spain), and Julia Waite, Sarah Hillary, Catherine Hammond and Mary Kisler (Auckland Art Gallery Toi o T?maki, New Zealand). 2.1kg.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. First Edition. This title was acquired from the Library of Northern Artist Robert Easton 1936-2023. Bob Eaton was a respected Northern artist whose large catalogue of work reflected a number of painting styles that mainly captured the changing industrial and rural landscapes of North East Lancashire. His early love of art saw him trained at Accrington Art College in the 1950s and following his Army Service he became a secondary school art teacher in Accrington. Bob gained a growing reputation locally for his work, but he also exhibited Nationally at the Royal Academy in London and at an exhibition of British Artists at the Louvre in Paris in the 1970s.After retiring from teaching there followed a forty year period of prolific output that coincided with an increasing reluctance to sell his work or have any interest in the business side of the art world. This period of deliberate retreat from public recognition conversely saw him in regular correspondence with a number of famous artists of the time. This thirst for knowledge was supplemented by the purchase of a diverse library of hundreds of quality art books, used by him for reference, learning and for the pleasure of reading and examining the artists' work.A prolific collector of books; a visitor of galleries and an exchanger of ideas with some of the greats of 20th century British Art. He was a lifelong true lover of his subject. Foremost however, he was also a very capable and talented practitioner in his own right, painting from hundreds of sketches made in all weathers on the dark fields and streets of his native county. Shunning the limelight that his ability probably warranted, he leaves behind him, a considerable and interesting library of books and a large catalogue of excellent paintings, hidden from the public for four decades and which exists largely intact following his death in 2023.This book is a Fine Copy in a Fine Dust-Jacket.Not price clipped.profusely illustrated throughout in colour. The book has a firm binding and with no hinge weakness.Lovely copy to own for the collector especially with the added provenance of it coming from the private collection of Robert Eaton,Large and Heavy 4to 258pp First Edition 1st Impression [2018].
