Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Not Stated (illustrator). First edition. An attractive illustrated reprint of the Scottish privateer's biography and travelogue of Asia. Two volumes of Captain Alexander Hamilton's biography are bound in one volume in this first edition edited by Sir William Foster. With 12 facsimile plates, three maps, and five folding maps across the volume. Hamilton was a seventeenth century Scottish sea, captain, privateer, and merchant, and this biography offers lively anecdotes of encounters with pirates, poisoning in Malacca s well as providing vivid descriptions of the countries and their social customs. On his arrival in Bombay in 1688, Hamilton briefly served under the Easy India Company in a local war, then set up as a private trader. As well as providing a window into the seamen's life, the work also provides valuable insights into British involvement and perceptions of early modern Asia. In the publisher's original leatherette binding. Externally, very smart, with just the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound, with bright and clean pages throughout. Very Good Indeed. book.

12mo, 2 pp. Twenty-eight lines of text. Good, on lightly-creased paper. Lockhart's signature has been docketed in ink (by Aitken?) 'Sir Robert'. A letter of condolence on the death of Aitken's father. Reminisces about the 'moment I came into his life', a 'luncheon at Charkley' soon after the First World War: 'The only other guest was Augustus John. [.] as you know, I learnt much from him. Indeed, it was he who taught me how to write, and in his house I met numerous people whom, but for him, I should never have known.' He considers that Beaverbrook treated him 'nobly'. He will keep the last letter he received from Beaverbrook: 'It was an original letter and, as you know, he always wanted originality in every writer and newspaper correspondent'. Beaverbrook was 'a very great and generous man' and Lockhart feels sure that his son 'will follow in his steps'. He hopes to see him, but is 'too old now to come often to London. I wish you a great future.'.

1p, 16mo. Aged, worn and discoloured, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse. 'Sir | In your notice of the late Mr. A. Smith, Banff, you mention that he wrote "The Ethics of Phrenology" an article in the Edinburgh Review. As this article was generally ascribed to Sir William Hamilton, I should be obliged by your mentioning whether you have full reliance on your authority in ascribing it to Mr. Smith? My only reason for asking the question is to do justice to Sir William Hamilton, if he is not the author.'.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight damage to a corner of the second leaf. Pencil note in another hand at foot of last page. Hamilton (1781-1876), Oriental Secretary to the British Embassy at Constantinople, published 'Antar: A Bedoueen Romance' with the London publisher John Murray in 1819. The present letter therefore relates to a pre-publicity copy of the book, which Wrighte has read with 'great pleasure'. Readers are, he considers, 'much obliged to Mr. Terrick Hamilton for presenting it to the Public in such an elegant English dress'. He complains that the book 'contains but little information with respect to the domestic habits of the Arabians' and no allusion to the Red Sea (despite the fact that it 'relates to the different Tribes of Arabs in Arabia Felix, bordering on the Coasts of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf'), but finds that it has 'every mark of genuineness'. He also discusses 'the Arabic names for the Constellations' and 'the pasturing of Cattle'. The latter part of the letter concerns his son Henry. He explains that he feels 'anxiety to get him into some situation within the Church or in some civil capacity at Home or abroad', and suggests that the reason why he has not replied to Brydges's 'kind Letter concerning him', may be that he 'has been improvident and I hope is now fully sensible of it, and is perhaps ashamed to write to you'. The Gentleman's Magazine, November 1854, carries a short obituary for Wrighte.

Peisse had already published his translation of 'Fragments de Philosophie de M. William Hamilton' (Paris, 1840), and had followed this with one from Dugald Stewart (1842-5). 2pp, 12mo. Forty-one lines of closely-written text. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with chipping and closed tears to edges. Folded once. Signed 'L. Peisse / Louis Peisse, conservateur de l'ecole impériale des Beaux-arts. 2. Rue Boursault.' The British recipient (one of Hamilton's executors?) is not named (in a postscript Peisse apologises for being unable to decipher his details, or those of his co-editors). Peisse is keen to answer the recipient's proposal regarding to Hamilton's lectures, pointing out that, since he has published a French translation of 'les articles philosophiques de Sir W. H. de L'edinburgh-Review, publication qu'il a bien voulu citer aux éloge dans plusieurs de ses ouvrages posterieurs et qui m'a valu de sa part de précieux témoignages privés déstime et de Bienveillance, je serais très disposé a agréez la proposition qui m'est faite au nom de sa famille'. The greater part of the letter is taken up with detailed questions regarding the proposal, needing to be answered before Peisse feels he can proceed. The proposal came to nothing, but in 1866 Peisse would publish a translation from John Stuart Mill.
