William Clark Russell (1844-1911) was an English writer best known for his nautical novels. At the age…of 13 Russell joined the Merchant Navy, serving for eight years. The hardships of life at sea damaged his health permanently, but provided him with material for a career as a writer. In this book he gives, with contributions from other writers, a description and history of sailing on British waters, and takes in the Downs, the Wight and the Solent Sea, St. George's Channel, the West Coast of Scotland, the Northern Shores, the Firth of Forth, the North Sea. A feature of the book is the large number of illustrations, both on plates and within the text, by artists such as J.C. Hook, Colin Hunter, Henry Moore, and Hamilton Macallum. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered bevelled boards with gold titling on the spine, gold titling with a gold nautical illustration on the front board and a gold stamped school crest on the rear board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and a little staining to the boards. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips and a few small spots of damage to the cloth on the fore edge of the rear board. The spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth at the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with a school prize label on the front fixed endpaper. PLEASE NOTE: This is a large and fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK. J.C. Hook, Colin Hunter, Henry Moore, Hamilton Macallum, and other artists (illustrator).
