Rundgespräch mit dem Titel 'Ökologische Rolle der Flechten' ein. Flechten sind symbiontische Lebensgemeinschaften aus Pilzen und photosynthetisch aktiven Algen oder Cyanobakterien. Sie besiedeln in verschiedenen Wuchsformen von krustig-schuppigen über blatt- und strauchartigen bis hin zu bartförmig herabhängenden Lagern eine große Vielfalt von Substraten in fast allen Lebensräumen. Dadurch sind sie ein allgegenwärtiger Bestandteil unserer Umwelt und bieten vielen Tieren Lebensraum, Nahrung und Tarnung vor Fraßfeinden. Eine wichtige ökologische Rolle spielen dabei vom Pilzpartner gebildete sekundäre Flechtenstoffe, die eine Fülle von Funktionen besitzen, darunter Schutz vor zu hoher Sonneneinstrahlung, toxischen Schwermetallionen oder Fraßschutz. Es bestehen komplizierte Wechselbeziehungen zwischen den Partnern innerhalb der Flechtensymbiose, die sie trotz ihrer Doppelnatur als einheitlich reagierender Organismus erscheinen lassen. Besonders bemerkenswert ist einerseits das Vordringen einiger Flechtenarten in für andere Organismen höchst lebensfeindliche Gebiete, wie zum Beispiel Hitze- und Kältewüsten, in denen sie bestimmende Elemente der Ökosysteme sind. Andererseits zeigen viele Flechten eine hohe Empfindlichkeit gegenüber anthropogenen Umweltbelastungen, wodurch sie sich als Bioindikatoren eignen. Flechten sind folglich nicht nur für die Wissenschaft von Interesse, sondern auch in angewandten Bereichen wie Biomonitoring oder Natur- und Denkmalschutz von wesentlicher Bedeutung. Wir freuen uns darüber, dass das Rundgespräch zu einem regen fachlichen Austausch zwischen den verschiedenen Disziplinen und Richtungen der Lichenologie und darüber hinaus führte.
