Some minor rubbing to extremities, one frontispiece is trifle cracked along gutter margin due to stress on heavy stock; minute repair at topmost gutter margin of three consecutive leaves. In fine condition. A splendid set. ~ New, enlarged edition, extremely rare in this breathtakingly beautiful hand-coloured variant. The wonderful plates, by Edward Scriven and others, are all superbly hand-coloured by contemporary hand and practically all are preserved fresh and bright with not a trace of offset. [Provenance:] From the library of Thomas Bell (1792-1880), an English zoologist, surgeon and writer, with his charming bookplate inside each cover. Later in the library of Jennie Tuttle Hobart (1849-1941), who was wife of a former Vice President Garret Hobart and a philanthropist and community activist in New Jersey, with his nicely decorated, armorial bookplate to first free endpaper of Volume I, above an old catalogue entry for the book.
