Paperback. Zustand: Good. Located just north of the Carolinas' border, Rutherford County is widely known for its natural wonders, including Chimney Rock and the Bottomless Pools. However, its vast appeal includes much more: numerous listings on the National Register of Historic Places; developments that embrace the construction of Lake Lure; national titles, including Forest City's "One of America's Ten Most Beautiful Cities;" and small towns and hamlets, such as Rutherfordton, Spindale, Avondale, and Henrietta. Chimney Rock and Rutherford County honors the accomplishments of one of North Carolina's most scenic counties. More than 200 vintage images, culled from postcards, newspapers, business files, and personal collections, offer a window into the county's past. Readers will learn of the county's defining moments, from its separation from Lincoln County to its supreme sacrifice during World War II of 149 young men, as well as the county's historic places, like Pine Gables (1700s), the Lake Lure Inn, and the Bechtler's Mint (1831). Readers also have the singular chance to meet well-known Rutherford County figures, including textile magnate Raleigh Rutherford Haynes, screenwriter Earl Owensby, radio announcer Jerrell Bedford, and Sheriff Damon Huskey, who served the county for 24 years.…

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Located along the borders of the Carolinas, Shelby and Cleveland County possess a special charm in the Tar Heel State, enjoying a rare combination of an agreeable climate, a picturesque countryside, and cordial citizens. Incorporated in 1843 and serving as the county seat, early Shelby enjoyed a long history of agricultural development and growth, ranging from its prosperous cotton interests to the increase of textile industries across its rural landscapes. In this volume, with over 200 historic postcards and photographs, you will journey back to the Cleveland County of yesteryear, a time when Gardner-Webb University was known as Boiling Springs High School and Junior College, when the county's numerous hotels were the destinations for many vacationers seeking rest and rejuvenation from the area's famed healing spring waters, and when Cleveland County hosted one of the South's largest county fairs, offering a variety of events and the memorable phrase: "meet me at the water wheel." Covering the city's and county's unique story from the turn of the century through the 1960s, this visual history touches upon many aspects of everyday life, showcases much of the region's lost architectural treasures, and remembers several of the area's most recognizable citizens, such as the political "Shelby Dynasty" of Governor O. Max Gardner, Governor Clyde R. Hoey, Judge James L. Webb, and Judge Edwin Yates Webb.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Gardner-Webb University is a leading regional Christian university with a distinguished history. The school opened in 1907, and a junior college program was added in 1928. By World War II, the high school program had been phased out. In 1942, the school changed its name from Boiling Springs Junior College to Gardner-Webb College in honor of former North Carolina Gov. O. Max Gardner and his wife, Fay Webb Gardner. The university is proud of its long line of successful presidents. Under the leadership of Dr. Philip L. Elliott, the institution's first long-term president, the student body grew, the campus was expanded, and the school joined the family of colleges supported by the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Today, Gardner-Webb offers both undergraduate and graduate studies in an idyllic Southern setting.…
