Mit diesen Worten charakterisiert Karl Voll den holländischen Künstler, Zeitgenosse Rembrandts, Adriaen Brouwers und Jan Steens. Mit Rembrandt verbindet Frans Hals ein ähnliches menschliches wie künstlerisches Schicksal: In den dreißiger Jahren des 17. Jahrhunderts ein hochgeachteter Bürger und vielbeschäftigter Porträtist der Stadt Haarlem, brachte ihn seine unkonventionelle Malweise in den vierziger Jahren in Widerspruch zu den Repräsentationsansprüchen des reich gewordenen holländischen Bürgertums, so daß der Künstler in wirtschaftliche Schwierigkeiten geriet und im Alter als Unterstützung einen städtischen Ehrensold erhielt. Für über zweihundert Jahre fiel dieser große Maler, dessen Werk neben das Rembrandts gestellt werden kann, der Vergessenheit anheim. Erst 1879 wurde er von Max Liebermann als eine Sensation neu entdeckt und als ?Vorläufer" der Impressionisten gefeiert. Heute gehört Frans Hals mit seinen Darstellungen von Fischerjungen und -mädchen, von singenden und musizierenden Kindern, von prägnanten Typen aus den Schenken der Haarlemer Vorstadt wie auch mit seinen großartigen Schützenstücken und den in ihrer Vielzahl und Qualität nahezu unübertroffenen Porträts zu den volkstümlichsten Künstlern überhaupt. In seinen Bildern, vor allem in den ohne Auftrag nach Modellen aus dem einfachen Volk entstandenen, findet man vom leisen zaghaften Lächeln bis zum lauthals sich Bahn brechenden Gelächter das menschliche Lachen in all seinen Abstufungen wiedergegeben. Diese heitere, vitale Lebenseinstellung war begleitet von einer Steigerung und Vertiefung der Aussage, von dem wachsenden Bemühen um Erfassen der menschlichen Charaktere, das jedes oberflächliche Zur-Schau-Stellen überwand.
