The prose seminar is based on a line-by-line discussion of one of Borges' most distinctive stories, 'The End of the Duel'. Borges explains how he wrote the story, his use of local knowledge, and his characteristic method of relating violent events in a precise and ironic way. From this close analysis of his methods he is drawn- into illuminating general observations on the role of the writer and the function of literature. The poetry section starts with some general remarks by Borges on the need for form and structure and goes on to a close look at four recent Borges poems. The last section, on translation, is particularly interesting. Borges' reputation has spread only gradually to the English-speaking world and hence many of his works written in the 1930s and 1940s are only now being published in translation.
