All points for Stout Viking 1sts met - $2.50 price on the front flap, green cloth boards, list of Stout titles opposite the title page & statement "Printed in the USA by H Wolff Manufacturing Company" on the copyright page. Significant lloss to the spine of the DJ - the top 2" an the bottom 3.5" . Numerous chips and closed tears to the flap folds with some loss to the tips. The front panel presents reasonably well except for a .75" x 1.5" loss at the top left at the spine (part of the loss at the top of the spine), Light fading at the top & bottom of the spine of the book corresponding to the DJ loss The internals are clean and tight. Mild spine lean. A very good book with a place holder DJ.

Nearly all of the plates have been signed by the engravers; and 50 of the plates have been Signed by the artists including W.H. Gibson, Thomas Moran, Mary Hallock Foote, F. Hopkinson Smith, W.H. Lowe, A.B. Frost, J.D. Smillie and many others. Seldom found complete, this selection purports to be the best of the 600 illustrations from the set of Longfellow's works; but just as likely the determination was made based upon the overrun of the prints still available. One of 500 numbered sets, this is set #4. Signed.
