In 1819, William Smith, sailing a general cargo from Montevideo to Valparaiso, ventured further south around Cape Horn in search of favourable winds. This expedition led to the sighting of land at 62°S, a claim initially met with skepticism. However, Smith confirmed his discovery on a subsequent voyage, prompting the Senior Naval Officer in Valparaiso, Captain Shirreff, to charter the brig Williams for a more detailed survey under Bransfield?s command.The core of this volume is Midshipman Charles Poynter's first-hand account of the voyage, which marks the first sighting of the Antarctic mainland. Poynter's journal, recently uncovered in New Zealand, is a critical resource as it survives as one of the few primary records of this historic expedition.
