Rare NASA Apollo 13 Saturn V Launch Vehicle Emergency Procedure Manual signed by Apollo 13 Mission Commander Jim Lovell and Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise. Quarto, original wrappers, contains approximately 150 pages of emergency procedures with several folding charts and diagrams at rear. Signed on the second title page, "Jim Lov…ell Apollo 13" and "Fred Haise Apollo 13." In near fine condition. A unique piece of NASA history. Apollo 13 (April 11â"17, 1970) was the seventh crewed mission in the Apollo space program and the third meant to land on the Moon. The craft was launched from Kennedy Space Center on April 11, 1970, but the lunar landing was aborted after an oxygen tank in the service module ruptured two days into the mission, disabling its electrical and life-support system. The crew, supported by backup systems on the lunar module, instead looped around the Moon in a circumlunar trajectory and returned safely to Earth on April 17. The mission was commanded by Jim Lovell, with Jack Swigert as command module pilot and Fred Haise as lunar module pilot. The story of Apollo 13 has been dramatized several times, most notably in the 1995 film Apollo 13 based on Lost Moon, the 1994 memoir co-authored by Lovell â" and an episode of the 1998 miniseries From the Earth to the Moon.

Swigert, Jr. (* 30. August 1931 in Denver, Colorado; ? 27.… Dezember 1982 in Washington, D.C.) war ein amerikanischer Astronaut. Er ist vor allem dafür bekannt, an der Mission Apollo 13 teilgenommen zu haben. Swigert war ein Testpilot bei der North American Aviation, bevor er zur NASA kam. Er diente bei der Air Force von 1953 bis 1956 und als Kampfpilot in Japan und in Korea. Von 1957 bis 1964 war er Testpilot bei Pratt & Whitney. Swigert war einer der 19 Astronauten, die von der NASA im April 1966 ausgewählt wurden. Er war ein Mitglied der Unterstützungsmannschaft für die Missionen Apollo 7 und Apollo 11. Zunächst war Swigert nur ein Mitglied der Ersatzmannschaft für die Apollo 13, ersetzte jedoch 72 Stunden vor dem Start der Apollo-13-Mission im April 1970 den Kommandokapselpiloten Ken Mattingly, nachdem die Ärzte für diesen den Ausbruch der Röteln vorhergesagt hatten. Während des Fluges von Apollo 13 zum Mond kam es zur Explosion eines Tanks, wodurch die geplante Mondlandung aufgegeben werden musste. Technische Improvisation war nötig, um die drei Besatzungsmitglieder in ihrem beschädigten Raumfahrzeug lebend zur Erde zurückzubringen. Mit Swigert war damit zufällig ausgerechnet der Astronaut an Bord der Apollo 13, der sich am besten mit den Notfallmaßnahmen in der Apollo-Kommandokapsel auskannte, da er persönlich an der Ausarbeitung der entsprechenden Prozeduren beteiligt gewesen war. Swigert meldete den der Explosion folgenden Spannungsabfall beim Kontrollzentrum der Raumfahrtmission mit den Worten ?Okay, Houston, we?ve had a problem here.? Auf Nachfrage des Kontrollzentrums in Houston wiederholte sein Kollege Jim Lovell, der Kommandant des Raumflugs, diese Meldung.[1] In der Verfilmung der Mission wurde die Aussage von dem Schauspieler Tom Hanks mit den leicht abweichenden Worten ?Houston, we have a problem? wiedergegeben. Die Nüchternheit der Aussage, die im Gegensatz zur lebensbedrohlichen Situation stand, in die die Astronauten durch die Explosion geraten waren, machte den Ausspruch dann auch populär, der seitdem zur untertreibenden Kommentierung eines unvorhergesehenen, großen Problems verwendet wird.[2] Unmittelbar nach der Landung wurde Swigert wie die anderen beiden Astronauten von der Apollo 13 durch den Präsidenten Richard Nixon mit der Presidential Medal of Freedom ausgezeichnet, eine der beiden höchsten zivilen Auszeichnungen der USA. Swigert nahm im April 1973 einen Urlaub von der NASA, um Executive Director des Wissenschaftsausschusses im Repräsentantenhaus der Vereinigten Staaten zu werden. Er verließ die NASA und den Ausschuss im August 1977, um sich in der Politik zu engagieren. 1979 wurde er der Vizepräsident der BDM Corporation in Golden. Diese Aufgabe hätte eigentlich Buzz Aldrin übernehmen sollen, der dafür Pilot der Mondfähre Eagle wurde. Haise musste in die Ersatzmannschaft rücken und kam wieder nicht zum Einsatz. So kam er am 11. April 1970 mit Apollo 13 zu seinem ersten Weltraumflug. Haise sollte die Landefähre Aquarius steuern und war dafür vorgesehen, als sechster Mensch die Mondoberfläche zu betreten. Aufgrund einer Explosion im Apollo-Raumschiff auf dem Weg zum Mond wurde die Mondlandung jedoch abgesagt, und Haise konnte froh sein, zusammen mit James Lovell und John Swigert lebend zur Erde zurückgekehrt zu sein. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969, at 20:17 UTC, and Armstrong became the first person to step onto the Moon's surface six hours and 39 minutes later. Aldrin joined him 19 minutes later, and they spent roughly two hours together exploring the site they had named Tranquility Base upon landing. Armstrong's first step onto the lunar surface was broadcast on live TV to a worldwide audience. He described the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Apollo 11 effectively proved US victory in the Space Race to demonstrate spaceflight superiority, by fulfilling a national goal proposed in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, "before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.".
