Dickens's model for Mr. Jaggers in Great Expectations, Harmer was a lawyer who practiced in the criminal courts. His daily experience led him to expose miscarriages of justice in order to promote reforms in criminal procedure. One such instance was the trial of Holloway and Haggerty, who were convicted through flimsy evidence and the testimony of a witness with questionable motives. It was a controversial trial, so the execution attracted an unusually large crowd of about 40,000 people. About 40 people were trampled to death as the crowd attempted to push closer to the scaffold. Sir George Chetwynd [1783-1850], the recipient of this copy, was an Oxford-educated barrister and politician. He was a Member of Parliament for Stafford, where he had a residence, Brocton Hall, and was later High Sheriff of Warwickshire, the location of another residence, Grendon Hall. OCLC locates 5 copies of Murder of Mr. Steele in law libraries (Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Library of Congress, University of Minnesota). The map is not mentioned in any catalogue records for the title and is unrecorded as a separate item, with no copies located on. Signed.
