Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) was one of the greatest engravers of the 20th century. Between 1926, when he went to Paris and established his world-famous workshop, Atelier 17 and 1988 he made approximately 500 prints of outstanding originality. This volume of essays surveys his work, the surrealist years, and his revolutionary impact on American printmaking in the 1940s. This volume also includes an annotated catalogue of his prints shown at the Ashmolean Museum's retrospective exhibition of his work held from 11 October to 27 November, 1988.
