Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> More than thirteen years have elapsed since the manuscript of the first edition was completed. For some time it has been clear that a second edition was needed. In the last fifteen years statistical mechanics has developed at an enormous pace, and a textbook on statistical mechanics should take these developments into account. When I started to contemplate what changes should be made, it soon became clear that, if the book were to cover even approximately the same ground as the first edition did, it would have to be greatly expanded. It was then decided to split the book into two parts, the first volume covering the basic theory; a second volume, advanced theory. As a result, the present volume is now probably more suitable as a textbook for advanced undergraduate courses than the first edition was. To improve its usefulness a variety of problems has been included. I am greatly indebted to R. Kubo and the North Holland Publishing Company for permission to incorporate some.

BIOGRAPHY: TER HAAR, Dirk (Oosterwolde, 19 April 1919 :: Drachten, 3 September 2002) (Dr., B.Sc., M.Sc., MA, D.Sc., FRSE) was an Anglo-Dutch physicist, he studied physics at Leiden University, worked as research fellow to Niels Bohr in Copenhagen, and took his Ph.D. in Leiden under Hendrik Kramers. He became professor of physics at the University of St. Andrews (1949). He was a Fellow of Magdalen College and reader in theoretical physics at the University of Oxford. Many prominent scientists studied under TER HAAR, including Anthony Leggett, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics (2003), and Deng Jiaxian, one of the leading scientists and founders of Chinese nuclear weapon programs. / INVENTORY: 1.
