L'invasion de l'île d'Okinawa par les seigneurs féodaux japonais amena la soumission totale des habitants qui se virent interdire toutes les armes possibles. On raconte même que les villageois ne disposaient que d'…un seul couteau, enchaîné à un pieu au milieu de la place du village et sous la surveillance permanente d'un soldat japonais. Les occupes réagirent avec finesse en développant le karaté, art de combattre à mains nues puis en utilisant les instruments aratoires quotidiens comme armes puissantes et mortelles. L'intérêt de cette idée résidait dans la fallacieuse apparence inoffensive de ces instruments. Il en fut ainsi pour le nunchaku, qui servait à piler le riz et le blé. Cet instrument était constitué de deux morceaux de bois réunis à leur extrémité par du crin de cheval. Ce crin a été maintenant remplacé par une corde de nylon. Le maniement du nunchaku a été calqué sur la pratique du karaté puisque son développement fut parallèle à celui du karaté. Il est donc conseillé d'avoir quelques bases en karaté (postures, blocages, attaques de poing) pour entreprendre la pratique du nunchaku. Comme pour le karaté, l'étudiant devra beaucoup pratiquer seul les mouvements de base qui devront être sus parfaitement avant d'étudier les défenses et les katas. Perfectionnez-vous inlassablement car la pratique d'un tel art est non seulement l'étude d'une arme terrible de défense personnelle mais aussi une façon d'acquérir une bonne santé physique par les nombreux exercices proposés. La continuité dans l'effort et la persévérance d'un tel art martial difficile vous fortifiera l'esprit et vous rapprochera encore de l'essence même du Budo. A une époque où la concentration urbaine favorise la criminalité et les attaques personnelles il semble bon de découvrir une méthode nouvelle de défense, méthode qui ne fait pas appel à des armes prohibées par la loi : revolver, couteau, matraque. La redécouverte de deux morceaux de bois octogonaux réunis à leur extrémité par une corde de nylon va sans doute satisfaire tous ceux qui souhaitaient avoir sous la main une arme efficace et peu encombrante. Le nunchaku originaire d'Okinawa présente toutes les caractéristiques requises pour en faire un allié sûr en toutes occasions. D'apparence inoffensif, le nunchaku, s'il est manié correctement, peut faire des ravages terribles parmi d'éventuels assaillants, armés ou non. Sa vitesse de maniement, sa puissance de frappe, ses techniques subtiles en font une arme infiniment plus efficace qu'un couteau, un bâton ou une bouteille. Sa longueur vous met pratiquement hors de portée d'attaques quelconques et le passage très rapide d'une posture à une autre permet, comme en karaté, de faire face à plusieurs adversaires à la fois. Le nunchaku sera utilisé dans le cas de blocage nécessitant une surface dure de réception (contre bâton par exemple ou instrument tranchant). La force de frappe due à la vitesse initiale de la deuxième partie du nunchaku, vitesse d'autant plus grande que le mouvement est sec, suppléera à la limite des moyens physiques des femmes qui n'ont pas la force de pénétration des karatékas masculins. La conception même du nunchaku permettra des attaques dans toutes les directions, ce qui ne serait pas le cas avec un bâton entièrement rigide. Léger, facile à transporter, potentiellement destructeur, le nunchaku apparaît comme le garde du corps discret et moderne de tous ceux et toutes celles qui craignent pour leur vie, leur portefeuille ou leur vertu.
