Bound into Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood printed wrappers with additional typed material on the cover. Moderate toning and wear with occasional very l…ight staining, very good and sound. An exhaustively researched working paper on the history of the American independent (i.e., non-Bell [p.241]) telephone manufacturing industry. The report, apparently prepared for the law firm Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby, Palmer & Wood, was created under the supervision of Mr. K. Ridley, Contract Manager at Western Electric Company over the course of 2½ years by H.L. Hamilton with the assistance of O.E. Hill and A.H. Parr. The report covers the period from 1876, when Bell applied for his first patent, to the early 1950s. The report is referred to as "write-up covering Affirmative Topic No. 9" and "Copy 27" is typed on the cover. Bound in before the report is a carbon copy of a 1955 typed memo, Signed by Clifford W. Smith, addressed to co-researcher O.E. Hill, congratulating him on the "tremendously difficult search involved in obtaining factual data going back practically to the Bell patents." (Copies of the letter were sent to the other researchers as well.) He closes by saying that he is confident it will not not only be useful and valuable "for the purpose for which it was intended" but also as a document of "very great historical value to the Bell System and perhaps even outside of the Bell System." A massive history of the independent telephone manufacturing industry in America, presumably published in very small numbers. We have been unable to locate another copy.
