Zustand: Bueno. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Bien. Primera edición, ejemplar numerado. Procedencia: Carlos Messera.

First edition in English, rare offprint issue, signed on the first page by the translator Donald A. Yates, who has also hand-corrected the error in the author's pseudonym on the front wrapper and first page, changing "Buston" to "Bustos". No other copies are traced institutionally or in auction records. H. Bustos Domecq was the pseudonym used jointly by Borges and Adolfo Bioy-Casares. The two first met in 1931 at Villa Ocampo, where they were both invited as guests of the influential Argentine intellectual Victoria Ocampo, and subsequently collaborated on a series of projects including short stories, screen plays, and fantasy fiction. The Twelve Figures of the World was originally published in Spanish as "Las doce figuras del mundo" in the collection Seis problemas para Don Isidro Parodi (1942). Yates's translation appeared in the Texas Quarterly (vol. III, no 3, Autumn 1960) and represents one of the earliest appearances of Borges's writing in English, preceding by two years the influential collection Labyrinths (1962), which Yates also translated (jointly with James Irby). Yates was responsible for getting Borges his very first published appearance in English, when he brought the story "The Garden of Forking Paths" to the attention of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine (published in August 1948, translated by Anthony Boucher). Octavo. Original printed wrappers, wire-stitched as issued. Slight toning and rubbing to spine, else a fine copy.…
