Mit seiner Gedichtsammlung Grüße des Werdenden machte er den Arbeitern Mut, sich gegen den Bismarck-Staat zu wehren. In dem Gedicht Zum Gedächtnis (1875) würdigte er die Pariser Kommune von 1871. Das Gedicht Korinthiaka widmete er dem jungen Wilhelm Blos. In Unterm Ausnahmegesetz, das auch in Der Sozialdemokrat erschienen war, wendete er sich gegen den Fürsten von Friedrichruh.[10] Nachdem Wedde durch die Verhängung des Kleinen Belagerungszustandes aus Hamburg vertrieben worden war, siedelt er in die Hansestadt Lübeck über.
