Today a Western tourist might stroll around the centre of Budapest and remark with surprise that the famous Chain Bridge was designed by William Tierney Clark, a British engineer, and fabricated in 1842-1849 by Adam Clark. An even more observant stroller will register that the building on the Pest side of the Danube that one faces as one crosses this bridge, with its gilded and statue covered facade, colonnaded upper story and pinnacled corners, which mark it out as an outstanding example of Hungary's distinctive brand of Art Nouveau architecture, bears in the centre of its facade the name and image of Sir Thomas Gresham, Lord Mayor of London. It was built in 1903-1916 for the Gresham Life Insurance Society Limited, and was designed by the Hungarian architect, Zsigmond Quittner. Such collaborations serve to illustrate the strong commercial and cultural links between Britain and Hungary that developed during the nineteenth century and reflect the rapid expansion that took place especially in Budapest towards the end of the century, when the country began to flex its financial muscles and to seek an independence from the Habsburg yoke. The art of late nineteenth-century Vienna has long been recognized as a brilliant flowering of native talent, yet the developments during this period in Hungary, the smaller, but distinct half of the Austro-Hungarian empire, have been rarely considered so significant. A pioneering exhibition on this subject was held at the Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest in 1986 and it re-awakened among the Hungarian people an awareness of a long forgotten past.
