Illustrated paper covered boards with printed lettering to the spine, illustrated endpapers. Octavo, 240 x 170 mm, pp. 32 french-folded leaves, fully-illustrated throughout. Of the edition of 170 copies, 35 were hand coloured on the instructions of the artist. A book in Fine condition. The drawings are taken from sketchbooks completed between 1983 and 1989. The drawings are as near original size as possible and are left with the original captions and instructions. John Lawrence (1933-) is an English illustrator and wood-engraver. He has illustrated more than 200 books, including Watership Down by Richard Adams and Philip Pullman's 'Lyra's Oxford' and 'Once Upon a Time in the North'. He has twice won the Francis Williams Award for illustration and twice been runner-up for the Kurt Emil - Maschler Award. He was visiting professor of illustration at Camberwell School of Art until 1993, having previously taught at Brighton School of Art in the 1960s. Until 2010 he taught at Cambridge School of Art on the M.A. course in Children's Book Illustration.
