In den WarenkorbZustand: GOOD. First edition. The second of Odum's three classic works on African American music. As noted in the preface, the songs in this volume were collected in northern Mississippi and northern Georgia, with a few other songs and fragments from North Carolina and Tennessee included for comparative purposes. They are divide…d into three categories: religious songs (the largest group), social songs, and work songs. Much of the book consists of the lyrics to the songs. Includes a select bibliography, and an index to the songs. vii, 306 pp. Ex-library with the usual markings, but overall a good copy, tight and sturdy in very dark blue cloth with gilt lettering (corners bumped, a bit of wear to the ends of the spine covering).

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'John Henry: Tracking Down a Negro Legend' is a seminal folkloric study that explores the historical and mythical roots of one of America's most enduring folk heroes. Guy B. Johnson undertakes a rigorous investigation into the origins of the John Henry ballad and the man behind the hammer, ex…amining whether the legendary steel-driver was a real person or a composite of various figures from the late 19th-century railroad construction era. The work delves into the cultural significance of John Henry within African American history and American labor lore. By analyzing numerous versions of the ballad and interviewing individuals who claimed to have known the hero, Johnson provides a comprehensive look at how folk legends are formed and sustained across generations. The book serves as both a detective story and a sociological analysis, highlighting the intersection of work songs, racial identity, and industrial progress.Readers interested in folk music, Southern history, and the development of American mythology will find this text to be an invaluable resource. 'John Henry: Tracking Down a Negro Legend' remains a cornerstone of folklore studies, offering deep insights into the power of song and the persistence of the human spirit against the machine. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Negro Workaday Songs' is a foundational study of African American folk music and labor traditions, compiled by sociologists Howard W. Odum and Guy B. Johnson. This volume offers a comprehensive look at the spontaneous musical expressions found in the daily lives of Black laborers in the earl…y 20th-century American South. Unlike stylized spirituals or commercial blues, the songs collected here-ranging from chain gang chants and construction rhythms to secular ballads and 'bad man' songs-provide an authentic window into the social psychology and creative spirit of a marginalized workforce.

Unlike stylized spirituals or commercial blues, the songs collected here-ranging from chain gang chants and construction rhythms to secular ballads and 'bad man' songs-provide an authentic window into the social psychology and creative spirit of a marginalized workforce. The work documents over 250 songs, categorizing them by theme and function while analyzing the cultural environment from which they emerged. By focusing on 'workaday' music, the authors capture the raw, unpolished reality of human experience through lyrics that reflect hardship, humor, resilience, and resistance. This collection remains an essential resource for those interested in ethnomusicology, sociology, and the rich heritage of African American oral traditions. It preserves a vital segment of American musical history, illustrating how song served as both a tool for labor and a medium for storytelling and emotional release. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 1st Edition. Offering this original copy of "John Henry: Tracking Down a Negro Legend," by Guy B. Johnson. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1929, 1st Edition. Black cloth hardcover with dust jacket, stamped gilt on spine rough cut page edges, pp. 1…55. Frontispiece illustration is a facsimile of an old printed version of "The Ballad of John Henry." Part of the University of North Carolina Social Study Series. This is a scholarly investigation into the reality of the famous African American folk hero, John Henry - to separate the "real man" from the one celebrated in American ballads. Overall condition is Very Good. Binding is square and secure, cover shows very little wear. The jacket is intact, but price clipped and chipped at the spine ends and corners with some loss; there is a closed tear to the back flap fold. The previous owner's vintage bookplate is on the pastedown, else endpapers in great shape. Pages show mild age toning, and four pages have a shadowing tan mark (see pictures, the mark shows through pp. 14-17), otherwise no marks, writing, creases or tears. A nice solid copy! Guy Benton Johnson (1901-1991) was a white American sociologist and anthropologist who worked closely with Howard Odum on foundational studies of African American folk music in the early 20th century. He also worked with W.E.B. du Bois to create a comprehensive encyclopedia on Black history and culture, but they never finished it. [C2].
