Index. Industrialization urbanization equation can hardly explain the growth of the urban spaces in most of the developing regions of the world in general and the underdeveloped areas within them in particular. The process of urbanization in such cases can best be explained in terms of social political and demographic forces rather than the forces of economics. Contributions in this volume have made an attempt to understand the nature of growth of the urban areas in relatively underdeveloped north eastern region of India where urban spaces being grafted primarily due to the spread of the administrative centers are devoid of any strong economic raison d'etre and hence informal sector has become the predominant source of urban livelihood. Attempts have been made to unravel the nexus between informality and poverty that reinforce each other in the urban labour market. Special efforts have been made to study the slums where urban poverty has been concentrated. As the management of slums has become an integral part of overall urban administration a number of contributors have pleaded for a better deal for the underprivileged slum dwellers. 292 pp.

The Indo Myanmar joint task force report by Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industries. Index. India shares 1643 km long border with Myanmar that passes through the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh Manipur Mizoram and Nagaland. Although cross border contact and movement of people are known throughout but they have not led to any strong economic interdependence between the regions across the border so far. The state centric security perception both in India and Myanmar treated this border as vulnerable periphery. As a result the idea of shared border and border area development through mobilizing the synergies across the border did not receive due attention from the national power centres. The geo economic potentials of the border regions were far outweighed by the geo political considerations. This situation has however changed following the end of the cold war paradigm rise of South East Asian tigers and release of forces of globalization. While the demise of the bi polar world has freed the nations who seek to forge new strategic partnership the globalizing forces have brought economic interest in the forefront of nation's foreign policy. With the growth of regional trading arrangements border areas are now viewed as economic corridors rather than far flung peripheries. It is from this perspective that the contributors in this volume have examined the status problems and potentials of Indo Myanmar border trade based on resource production and demand structures across the border. The book also attempts to figure out the implications of India's look east policy for her north eastern region. It also pleads for treating border trade as a strategic tool for the economic development of the hitherto neglected regions across the border. 310 pp.

Human development is a powerful concept than conventional measure of Gross National Product (GNP) in understanding human well being. With the rejection of trickle down hypothesis rising disillusion with assumed positive association between growth and well being new insights gained in the relationship between growth and equity that nullifies the claim of negative relationship at least at early stage of growth the exploitation of the capability approach towards development and the emergence of the new growth theories that focus on the role of the human factor in economic growth all have brought a sharp focus on the human development as a necessary condition for sustainable growth. Contributions in this volume deal with different aspects of human development. Contributors have attempted to analyze the various linkages between globalization and human development environment and human development social capital and human development and education and human development. Authors have made an attempt to assess the status of human development in the states of North East India. This volume deserves the attention of the academia policy makers development agencies and activists alike. 248 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This book deals with the prospect and potential of development of India's North-Eastern Region (NER) through sub-regional cooperation with the neighbouring members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Although landlockedness has long stunted the economic growth of NER, with ASEAN-India as well as India-Bangladesh connectivity projects gathering pace, the silver lining is appearing on the horizon. The completion of India-Myanmar-Thailand (IMT) Trilateral Highway connecting Moreh (Manipur) with Mae Sot (Thailand) across Myanmar will land-link the region with the ASEAN countries. Further extension of the Highway till Vietnam and Cambodia, as is being envisaged, will take the north-eastern region even closer to the ASEAN. Likewise, India is extending railways to Manipur which will eventually be connected with the rail network of Myanmar as a part of the Asian Development Bank's Trans-Asian Railway project. Besides, the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transportation Project (KMTTP) will open up maritime route for the north-eastern region by connecting India`s eastern ports with the Sittwe port in Myanmar. Again, Sittwe port will be connected with the riverine port of Paletwa on Kaladan river from where Lawngtlai in Mizoram will be connected by road. With the connectivity problem about to be resolved, in what ways would the north-eastern region engage with her South East Asian neighbours? What are the nodes of sub-regional cooperation that can benefit both NER and ASEAN? How can we enumerate and strategize the potential strength of the region which she can offer to her neighbours and identify the essential requirements that she can pick up from them? What role the other stakeholders (state and non-state actors) can play in synchronizing domestic economic initiatives in tune with the needs of the markets in neighbouring countries? How to map the various activity-, product-, service-, specific strengths of the different states in the region for which there are demands across the borders? Which cross-border projects are viable? How can we re-imagine the `border` as a conceptual apparatus for bridgability rather than a dividing entity of people on either side? How can the community bonding be used to promote a uniform social space in a group which is territorially divided? (jacket).

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. This volume deals with one of the most complicated inter-state border disputes involving India and China-the two most populous countries in the world. Sino-Indian border is conveniently divided into three sectors-Western, Middle and Eastern Sectors. The focus of the volume is on the Eastern Sector where China claims 98000 square kilometer of territory lying south of the McMahon Line presently under Indian occupation that roughly corresponds to Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh which China calls South Tibet. The contributions in this volume interrogate the nature of contesting claim over Arunachal Pradesh by the two neighbouring nations, question the adequacy of historical evidences behind such claims, analyze the dynamics of territorial politics being played out by them in order to obfuscate their mutual role in the politics of containment to each other, and caution to the danger of nuclear holocaust in the event of any sort of war adventurism as the war-waging capacity in them has metamorphosed from conventional to nuclear capability. The contributors have emphasized the benefits of 'cooperative relationship' between India and China which can open up immense opportunities in terms of enhancement of bilateral trade, investment and technology and underlined the costs of 'adversarial relationship' that might ruin the aspirations of the people. They have suggested for a pragmatic approach towards the resolution of the border dispute particularly in the Eastern Sector by way of converting the Line of Actual Control into international border between them with a 'give and take' spirit.

One time political adversaries have become partners in trade and development. This volume analyzes the nature of bilateral trade and identifies the road blocks that need to be addressed for further cementing the bilateral economic relation. Some contributors have made a case for the use of cross-border synergies for the development of the frontier areas in both India and China. As the market-led national development model has failed to infuse growth in the peripheries, this has resulted into secessionist demands by the communities living therein. This volume stresses on the use of border trade as a strategic tool for the development of the peripheral frontier regions in both India and China. (jacket).

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This book examines the strategic and economic logic behind the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar (BCIM) Regional Cooperation. According to estimates, BCIM covers approximately 9 percent of the world's mass and 40 percent of the world's population spanning across four countries, constituting the confluence of East, Southeast and South Asia. It contributes about 13 percent to world trade but ironically only 5 percent to inter-regional trade. This volume compares the various approaches to cooperation - trade-led vs project-led, geo-political vs geo-strategic, Sino-centric vs India-led.
