R. Penck. Teilaspekte der Auseinandersetzung des Künstlers mit dem Medium der Skulptur konnte man in den vergangenen Jahren hin und wieder zur Kenntnis nehmen - vor allem, aber nicht nur in der Kölner Galerie von Michael Werner, die sich dem Werk von Penck schon verpflichtet hatte, als der Künstler noch in der DDR lebte. Diese Ausstellungen, so wichtig sie waren, mußten sich auf eine bestimmte Arbeitsperiode von zwei oder drei Jahren, beziehungsweise auf ein bestimmtes Material, etwa die Karton-Skulpturen der Standart-Zeit oder die Bronzegüsse der letzten Jahre beschränken. Es bleibt jedoch dieser Ausstellung vorbehalten, den Bogen über mehr als zwanzig Jahre plastische Arbeit zu schlagen. Von den ersten, in den 60er Jahren entstehenden Arbeiten in Karton, die Penck als Entwürfe für zukünftige Skulpturen und darüber hinaus für eine zukünftige Welt begriffen hatte, über die aus Holz gehauenen Arbeiten und deren Echo im Bronzeguß bis zu den seit 1984 entstehenden Marmorarbeiten ist ein Werk versammelt, das wie nur wenige mit jeder neuen Arbeit einen anderen Ansatz findet, ein Werk, das sich dem Material ohne Einschränkungen - »ohne Netz« - zur Verfügung stellt und das so den schöpferischen Prozeß in das Endstadium der künstlerischen Arbeit hinübernehmen kann. Penck hat auf diese Weise den alten Begriff der Werktreue mit einem neuen Inhalt erfüllt. In der verhältnismäßig kleinen Ausstellungshalle der Kestner-Gesellschaft werden Pencks plastische Arbeiten so aufgestellt sein, daß jede mit jeder im Kontakt sein wird. Mit dieser Inszenierung versucht die Ausstellung einen wesentlichen Ansatz von Pencks künstlerischer Arbeit herauszupräparieren: jenseits aller an den Charakter des Materials und der Bearbeitung gebundenen Erscheinungsweise, jenseits der Chronologie, in der diese Arbeiten entstanden sind, will die Ausstellung der Idee dieser Kunst, ihrem »Principe generateur«, nahekommen.
