Guetti, James L. Word-music: the aesthetic aspect of narrative fiction. New Brunswick, N.J.: Rutgers University Press, 1980, ix, 226pp., good dust-jacket with a few chips and tears, very good black cloth, previous owner's name. In this work of practical criticism and literary theory, James Guetti defines two aspects of modern literature: the visual and the aural (or voiced). Guetti associates the visual aspect with a reader's desire to make sense of the experience of narrative, thereby dominating it by penetrating to its meaning. The reader sees the elements of a visual novel - scenes, colors, and images-and arranges them sequentially, making him in a sense the author of the story. Aural narratives prompt different sensations. Replacing his desire for mastery with a receptive attitude toward experience, the reader is passive rather than active, more playful than purposeful. Motion is stayed or interrupted, and the reader hears repetitions and variations on a theme, much as when listening to music. The reader is also aware that he is being told a story (rather than being asked to create one), as an imagination other than his own acts upon him. Aural experience demands that perceptions take place within the reader, since the range of forms is not extended outside but is contained within the fiction. Few works of fiction are exclusively aural or visual, and Guetti draws the reader's attention to the coalescence. - CONTENTS: Visual and Aural Motives in Fiction - The Sense of the Terminology - Noncognitive Images: Wallace Stevens - Voiced Narrative: A Clockwork Orange - Unvoiced Narrative - Mixed Motives - The Theory of Music and Fictional Form - Notes - Index. 9780813508832 ISBN 0813508835.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - . . . Maybe it was a good thing that we left Sweetwater, where the world was so much what it was for me that I never thought of its danger, never could separate its danger from the whole of it. Of course I remember the big Cottonmouth. And I remember earning fifty cents for cleaning out the bark and old newspapers from a squatter's woodshed, when another boy and I uncovered more than twenty scorpions . . . But so far as these and a few other images stand out to me now, as if they had been warnings, they are fictitious. For at the time they were part of a current, a current so strong that, if we had not left that house on the edge of the Everglades, maybe one day I would have gone out into the swamp and not come back. And sometimes years later I have thought that it would have been a good place not to come back from, the best place.
