Charles Pelham Groves (1887-1973) was a church historian of Africa, born in Wisconsin.He moved to Britain in 1897 and studied at University College Reading, and later at Manchester, before entering the Primitive Methodist ministry. From 1945 to 1954 he was Professor of Missions at the Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham. He wrote several books but his major work is his four volume 'The Planting of Christianity in Africa' which is the first serious attempt at a full-scale African church history. For sale is the third volume of this work in which the author continues the account of the European penetration into Africa and describes the effect of the "scramble for Africa" on the work of the various Christian missions and the growth of the Christian Churches. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with a name written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with some soiling and a small stain on the back. The spine ends and corners are bumped and nicked, most noticeably at the top of the spine. The top edge is rubbed and there are a few small tears of up to about 1/4" on the edges. The spine is slightly darkened.
