Soundly bound and clean; a teacher's gift inscription to a student penned front endpage and dated 1885. Illustrated with a good many full page woodcuts. Includes the title piece as well as seven additional stories; onlt the title pices is attributed to an author; it appears these stories may have first appeared in Lothrop's "Wide Awake" magazine; an ad for the magazine appears as the terminal printed leaf in the book. Cloth a little smudged and lightly shelf soiled. Cloth a little bumped and rubbed at extremities. Expected toning to the page stock. Overall a VG copy. Uncommon. Note an unusual story in southern "black" vernacular; "Christmas in a Cabin.".
