In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Very Good. GROSE, Francis engraving Adam Smith and Sparrow (illustrator). Plate 1: copper plate print datedAprilk, 1775. The engraving measures 12 cm x 17 cm including plate mark; Plate 2: copper plate dated March, 1775 measures 12 cm x 16.5 cm including plate mark - each over all with text 23cm x 33cm. Engraved by Smith and Sparrow respectively for Grose's Antiquities of England and Wales from a drawings by Grose in 1769 and 1772. Notes: Restoration work in the 1990s uncovered the fact that the gatehouse is actually built around a timber frame that is reinforced with iron. There are no known parallels for this method of construction, although it is reminiscent of a building method in the Low Countries where external walls are tied in to floors using iron work. In den WarenkorbNo Binding. Zustand: Very Good. GROSE, Francis engraved by R. Godfrey and Adam Smith (illustrator). Two copper plate prints dated June, 1772 and Mayl, 1776 respectively. The Castle engraving measures 11.5 cm x 16.5 cm including plate mark - over all with text 23cm x 33cm. Engraved by Godfrey om a drawing by Grose in 1768. The Plan and View measures 23 cm x 18cm and is taken from a drawing by Grose based on plans serveyed by a fellow officer probably about 1768. Both from Grose's Antiquities of England and Wales. Notes: The castle stayed in the Packer family until the mid 18th century, when Robert Packer married Mary Winchcombe, and the property passed into the Winchcombe family tree. From 1833-1881 the manor and castle was owned by Winchcombe Henry Howard Hartley. Only the gatehouse survives. The site is under the care of English Heritage and is protected from unauthorised change as a scheduled ancient monument. [For all of our prints by Francis Grose enter PRBGROSE in Key words] [QP].
