Erstausgabe
Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Approximate title: BY SEA FROM AMSTERDAM TO NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. A GUIDE FOR TRAVELERS WITH THE STEAM TRAVEL COMPANY "THE NETHERLANDS". Oblong 8vo. (19 cm.) 165p. Illustrated throughout with numerous black and white captioned photos. Flexible covers covered in brown and black Batik print with white letters on the front cover. Just touches of wear to extremities, Batik cloth clean and bright, white letters mostly intact, all photos in fine condition, else near fine to fine with no internal markings. The author's first initial looks like a "J" on title page, but all cataloging (including Netherlands National Library) says I. Groneman. Isaac Groneman (1832-1912) was a Dutch physician in the Dutch East Indies and an Indonesian expert. He is known for his many publications on Javanese culture and antiquity. This book appears to be the first edition of a travel book describing the voyage from Amsterdam to the Dutch East Indies via the Suez Canal, with stops in England, Genoa, Aden, and Colombo (Ceylon; now called Sri Lanka).

's-Gravenhage, Martinus Nijhoff, 1895. 87,[1] pp. 1 b./w. plan ('Schets van den kraton te Ngajogyakarta') & 25 plts with images after orig. photographs by Kassian Cephas. Re-bound in modern hardcover binding (h.cloth, without print). Oblong 4to. A well-known nineteenth-century Dutch book about the Garebeg (or Grebeg), a large public Javanese royal ceremony held at the kraton (palace) in Yogyakarta, in which the sultan distributes food mountains (gunungan) of rice and delicacies to the crowd in honor of important Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, and Mawlid al-Nabi (the Prophet's birthday). The word means "followed by a crowd" and combines ancient Javanese traditions (such as Rajawedha, a ceremony in which the king distributed food for prosperity) with Islamic syiar (proselytism). The photographs were taken by Kassian Cephas (or Kassian Céphas) ??(Jogyakarta, 1845 - Jogyakarta, 1912), with the Sultan s permission. He was a Javanese photographer at the court of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. He was the first Indonesian native to become a professional photographer. He was trained at the request of Sultan Hamengkoeboewono VI (1821-1877, reigned 1855 - 1877). His work in preserving Java's heritage was rewarded with membership in the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde van Nederlandsch-Indië, and the award of the Gold Medal of Honor.
