Con especial énfasis, analiza las diversas fronteras evocadas por el concepto de nación y cómo este se asocia con diferencias de género y de clase. Para ello, se propone como ineludible el conocimiento situado, el conocimiento local. Se trata de analizar etnográficamente la historia de una frontera del Cono Sur, entre Brasil y Argentina. Así, generando cruces entre el análisis histórico y el contemporáneo, el autor reconstruye el proceso a través del cual una línea trazada en un mapa deviene una frontera en el espacio territorial y es incorporada a los modos de pensamiento y a las rutinas de la gente del lugar. La pregunta central sería, entonces, de qué manera y hasta qué punto las fronteras políticas desencadenan efectos socioculturales que estructuran las prácticas políticas de las poblaciones fronterizas. Lejos de ser víctimas pasivas de estos procesos, estas poblaciones participaron, resistieron, reclamaron e influyeron en ellos de diversos modos. En síntesis, este libro es un estudio imprescindible acerca de los límites de la imaginación política nacional y de su "invención" histórica. Alejandro Grimson es doctor en antropología, profesor de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la Universidad de Buenos Aires e investigador del CONICET en el Instituto de Desarrollo Económico y Social. Ha dictado clases y conferencias, y publicado artículos en diversos países de América Latina y en Estados Unidos.
