In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good Only. Grignion [Engraver] (illustrator). First edition. A profusely illustrated look at the history of England, told chronologically through the reigns of each monarch and leader. The first and only edition of this work. Undated, dated using ESTC records. ESTC reference No T135893. Illustrated, with engravings by Grignion taken from original drawings by Metz, Stothard and Samuel Wale. This work was originally published in sixty parts. Here all parts are bound together to form one volume. Collated, with a frontispiece and ninety seven of ninety nine plates. This copy has been bound without the Map of Great Britain and the plate of Mary I. Collated using the binder's instructions to the rear of the work. Raymond's writings cover the origins of Great Britain, its Revolutions, Laws, Arts Inventions as well as a Chronology of Sovereigns. He claims to have corrected the errors of historians before him, removed party prejudices and to have produced 'in the most accurate, clear and impartial manner, every thing worthy of being recorded in the Annals of The British Empire' (title page). The history starts from the earliest times and continues to June 1790. In a contemporary full calf binding. Externally, sound with rubbing and loss to the boards and spine. Loss to the spine is to the first two panels and to the bottom where the leather is lifting. Rubbing is particularly heavy to the board edges. Internally, firmly bound. Instances of worming to the first and last few pages, to the bottom margin and not affecting text. Crease to the first and last few pages to the centre. Pages are very bright. Tidemarks to the bottom of several of the plates, affecting the margin only, never encroaching onto the image itself. Small hole to page 75 affecting six lines of text. Tape repair to the revers of the 'Four portraits of the Kings of England' plate, not visible to the image. Re-enforcement to the rear of plate to page 205 (Burning of St John's Monastery) , not visible to the image. Closed tear to the head of 'Gallant Behaviour of an English Sailor' plate, to the border only not affecting the image. Good Only. book.
