A double graduate of the St Petersburg Conservatoire, she emerged as a virtuoso pianist and composer in the romantic tradition. She was associated with some of the great musicians of her day, including Balakirev and Auer. She performed in both Germany and the UK in the 1900s, but her career petered out after 1920.Following her graduation from the St Petersburg Conservatoire Kashperova became personally acquainted with the poet Yakov Polonsky and often attended his literary gatherings. When he died in 1898 Kashperova responded by setting his enchanting and mystical 'legend' To a Child in Answer to the Question: Where Do the Stars Come From The baritone soloist takes the role of the father or grandfather who endeavours to answer the riddle posed in the title. He decides to relate 'a tale of old, an Eastern legend' which recounts how, long ago, the flowers would weep, so afraid were they of the dark. In response an archangel (soprano solo) descends to Earth and is so moved by the flowers' anguished appeal, she gathers 'all their tears in chalice gold / And bears them up to God in Heav'n above'. The baritone narrates the final scene as the Almighty casts the tears across the firmament, thus creating the constellations. The child's question is answered, and the peaceful domesticity of the opening scene returns.Instrumentation:soprano solo, baritone solo, choir (SSAA) and piano; Leokadia Kaschperowa (1872-1940), die als Klavierlehrerin von Strawinsky bisher nur als Fußnote in die Musikgeschichte einging, wird gerade wiederentdeckt. Daraufhin steigt ein Erzengel (Sopransolo) auf die Erde herab und ist von der verzweifelten Bitte der Blumen so gerührt, dass er 'all ihre Tränen in einem goldenen Kelch auffängt / Und sie zu Gott im Himmel hinaufträgt'. Der Bariton schildert die Schlussszene, in der der Allmächtige die Tränen über das Firmament gießt und so die Sternbilder entstehen lässt. No evidence survives of any public performance in Kashperova's lifetime although it is very likely that they were performed at her regular 'musical evenings at home on Tuesdays' mentioned in her Memoirs. The transparency of the piano writing strongly suggests that she would accompany herself singing. Kashperova, by all accounts, possessed a fine voice, and in the summer of 1906 she decided 'to learn from the artistry', as she put it, of the tenor Raimond von Zur-Mühlen who was widely celebrated for having developed (with Clara Schumann) the Lieder-Abend tradition. His summer-schools on the Baltic coast were frequented by aspiring singers from all over Europe, even Japan and India. Kashperova herself was responsible for the poetic lyrics of Songs of Love (in both Russian and German), which may well have emerged from her own bittersweet experience of life and love; she was not to marry until 1916 at the age of forty-four.
