"'Gore ot'' uma' is the most frequently quoted work in all Russian literature, from Pushkin to Nabokov and beyond. Dozens of lines, half-lines and happy phrases have entered the language and buried themselves deep in modern Russian speech" (Cornwell). - Griboedov (1795-1829) studierte Rechts-, Natur- und Geisteswissenschaften in Moskau und war während der Napoleonischen Kriege Mitglied eines Husarenregiments. 1816 trat er in diplomatische Dienste, zunächst in Petersburg, dann in Teheran, Tiflis und Georgien, wo er während des Dezember-Aufstandes 1825 wegen Spionage für mehrere Monate verhaftet wurde. 1829 konzipierte er den Text für den Vertrag von Turkmanchai, der den Krieg zwischen Russland und Persien beenden und Griboedov zum Russischen Minister in Persien machen sollte.
