Pocket Paperback. Zustand: Good. 11th Printing. Pocket paperback. xvi, 400 pages Wraps. Illustrations. Maps. Footnotes. Appendices. Creases to spine. Annotated by Colonel Paul D. Harkins. Text has darkened somewhat. Introduction by Douglas Southall Freeman. George Smith Patton Jr. (November 11, 1885 - December 21, 1945) was a General of the United States Army who commanded the U.S. Seventh Army in the Mediterranean theater of World War II, and the U.S. Third Army in France and Germany following D-Day: the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. Patton first saw combat during the Pancho Villa Expedition in 1916, taking part in America's first military action using motor vehicles. As part of the newly formed United States Tank Corps of the American Expeditionary Forces he saw action in World War I. His strong emphasis on rapid and aggressive offensive action proved effective, and he was regarded highly by his opponents in the German High Command. From the invasion of Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge, General George S. Patton, Jr., was the most flamboyant, audacious Allied leader of World War II. Brandishing his famous pearl-handled pistols and driven by a profound belief that wars are won by killing the enemy as fast as possible, Patton slammed the tanks and men of the Third Army across Europe at a breakneck pace. He battled not only the enemy but Supreme Headquarters; he complained SHAEF was doing all it could to deny him early victory. Now in these fascinating and frank memoirs, Patton speaks out with intense personal feelings about the Second World War, the art of war, and the soldier's life. He gives us an unforgettable self-portrait of an American professional soldier caught in the toils of war. Greg Beecham (drawings) (illustrator).

Mass market paperback. Zustand: Good. First Bantam Edition Printing [stated]. xv, [1], 377, [7] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Tabular information. Maps. Bibliography. Index. Preface by Admiral William Halsey. Some page discoloration. Stamps inside front cover and on first page. Frederick Carl Sherman (May 27, 1888 - July 27, 1957) was a highly decorated admiral of the United States Navy during World War II. He commanded USS Lexington (CV-2) from 1940 until her loss in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Sherman was a three-time recipient of the Navy Cross. Promoted to vice admiral in 1945, he became Commander, United States Fifth Fleet before retiring in 1947. Upon retirement, he was promoted to admiral on the retired list. Sherman wrote Combat Command, a history of the Pacific Theater of World War II, drawing on his personal experiences. Combat Command was published in 1950 by E.P. Dutton Inc, and again by Bantam Books in 1982. A shattered Navy desperately struggles for supremacy of the biggest battlefield of World War II--the Pacific Ocean. Death in the air and blood in the water, that was the war in the Pacific. "Combat Command" covers the entire epic story of the Pacific Campaign: the savage sea battles, the grand strategies, the tragic blunders, and the tremendous sacrifices and individual heroism of our men at war. Alan McKnight (Maps) and Greg Beecham and Tom Beec (illustrator).

Mass market paperback. Zustand: Good. x, [6]m 234, [6] pages. Wraps. Illustrations. Color fold-out illustration after front cover (with small initial in ink). Maps. Slightly cocked. Small part of front cover corner gone. This is one of the Bantam War Books series. Stanley Johnston (1900 - September 13, 1962) was an Australian-American journalist who, as a correspondent during World War II, wrote a story for the Chicago Tribune that inadvertently revealed the extent of American code-breaking activities against the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN). He was assigned to a press position aboard the USS Lexington in the Pacific. The story resulted in efforts by the United States government to prosecute Johnston and other Tribune journalists, an effort what remains the only time the Espionage Act was used against journalists in the United States. No indictment was returned, and grand jury proceedings were sealed until 2017. Derived from a Kirkus review: Dramatic, colorful, timely, and personal, this is a full length picture of the U.S.S. Lexington, her officers, and men, which is commemorative of the first engagement of aircraft carriers during WWII. From the history of her building, design, equipment, operations, tests, her power, sea-air tactics, to the working of her various departments and service branches, this chronicles her story in the Pacific, from the gaiety of crossing the line to the various engagements she experienced before her destruction. February to May, Bougainville, Lae and Salamava, Tulagi, and the Coral Sea with its climax of thirty miles separating the Japanese and United States' air striking forces, and the story of the attacking and the attack, and the Lexington's end from internal explosion and torpedoing by our own boats. It's a grand story, very real, clearcut, filled with courageous exploits, and amplified by technical detail. Special Illustrated Edition. Presumed first printing. Greg Beecham (Drawings), and Alan McKnight (Maps) (illustrator).
