In den WarenkorbTwo volumes, 12mo, pp. viii, 195, [1] advertisements; vii, [i], 170, [2] advertisements; short tear (or perhaps natural paper flaw) in lower margin of G1 in volume I; titles and last pages a bit stained at edges from the binding; else a fine copy in contemporary calf, red morocco labels, lightly rubbed. First and only edition of this picaresque novel by an extraordinary author. The early life of George Smith Green (d. 1762) is obscure, but by the mid-1740s he was established in Oxford High St, where he was a watchmaker. He also published a prose retelling of Milton's Paradise Lost (1745), a poem and two plays. This novel includes some poetry (II pp. 56-63, 69-71 and elsewhere), and concerns a spendthrift who runs through his wife's fortune, and ends by emigrating to the New World. Although it is undated, we know that this novel was published in 1757 because there are reviews in the Critical and Monthly for that year (Forster 1122). The Critical's account of the book calls the author 'the ingenious Mr. Green', and expresses the hope that a sequel would be forthcoming (there was none); however, the reviewer also says: 'The situations in this piece are quite in low-life; it everywhere abounds with attempts at humour, which are but faint, and we could not find any thing interesting in the whole' (III p. 476). Raven, British Fiction 1750-1770, 411. ESTC locates only the BL and Southampton University copies in the UK, although there is a copy at the Bodleian as well. In the USA, there are copies at Boston PL, Oberlin College, UCLA, Pennsylvania and Yale.
