Richard Bentley and Thomas Gray's collaboration forms an elegantly illustrated series of poems, with the 'Explanation of Plates' section overseen by Horace Walpole. According to Hazen, there were three distinct editions dated 1753, all with identical wording on the titlepage. Hazen suggests that this is the third edition. There is no exclamation mark in the rows of printer's flowers on the third and fourth pages of the 'Explanation of the prints'; and letter "d" is printed properly throughout p. 26. Lacking half-title and therefore unable to confirm Hazen's first issue point of the half-title reading 'Designs, &c.'. ESTC No.N34030 Collated, with a title page vignette, six engraved plates and numerous engraved head pieces and tail pieces. Missing half title. Influenced by French style, Bentley's intricate Rococo illustrations are paired with six major poems by Thomas Gray, including the Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard, forming an early milestone of the Strawberry Hill Gothic Revival. Curiously noted as 'designs', rather than poems, the title was written such in order to emphasise to readers that the poems were previously published by Gray, and not new works. Nonetheless, the handsome illustrations, of which there are six engraved plates as well as numerous vignettes and embellishments, make for a interesting and attractive collaborative volume.
